Whereas the two 8 bit games prior were re-imaginings of the genesis originals on 8 bit hardware, Sonic Chaos is the series's first fully original spinoff platformer. I'll get this out of the way and say this is better than the first two in pretty much every way. Sonic can use the spindash, Tails can fly, you can actually collect rings you lost and Sonic's signature slope-vulnerable control is now a bit more useful. While this game is mechanically superior to both of its 8 bit predecessors, it still carries a few of their flaws. The levels are still not very captivating to the eye. While I didn't find the past two games' difficulty spikes engaging, Sonic Chaos goes in the opposite direction and winds up with the same results. Sonic Chaos is simply too easy to be fun until you reach the final boss. I would give some examples but the game is so forgettable, I don't remember any of the stages. I recall Mecha Green Hill Zone but that's because there was a Blitz Sonic Stage based on it some time ago. I do remember receiving a lot of continues throughout the game. I think I got 3 at the end of one act.
Despite all this negativity, I do still recommend this game for the sake of the final boss. This is the most unnecessarily difficult challenge I've ever faced in a game and somehow beat. Eggman walks out on a tiny mech called the "Laser Walker". It has two legs and a windshield. Sonic is trapped in a small room with him and is forced to dodge projectiles that ricochet off of walls and have hit-boxes twice their size. Sonic has to hit Eggman 16 times. Be careful not to get too overzealous like I did. If you try and go for multiple hits you may end up sandwiched between Eggman and one of the walls leaving you at mercy to the deceptively large and fast projectile. Even after you hit Eggman 16 times you will have to move on to phase 2 where Eggman launches one final attack to ram Sonic full force. If you hit him anywhere else besides his weak area, which I will not disclose due to my memory, you will die in one hit; rings, shield and all. Maybe it's because of how dull the game is up to this point, but I have to give this game an extra point just for making this one boss as stupidly unfair as possible. While I struggle to remember 90% of anything through my two playthroughs of Sonic Chaos, I will never forget the maniacal genius of the good ole doctor's Laser Walker.
