Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island

So, this was meant to be the first 3d sonic game huh? It looks like they simply tilted the camera angle of the third game and given the characters 3d models rather than 2d sprites, however that's the least of this games problem so I'll let this slide.

Its biggest problem is how slippery the controls are, sonic running like he's on ice was fine in the previous titles as that added to its gameplay mechanic of balancing out his speed in the platforming stages. Here on the other hand, we need precise platforming to progress through the stages, many of which have gradual inclinations which makes it hard to determine how high he needs to jump in order to land on these platforms. Rescuing the flickies are also a pain as they fly away whenever sonic takes damage, meaning you have to recollect them in order to lead them to the goal ring which makes an already tired fetch quest that much more irritating than progress through.

The graphics are nice which is a given for a sonic game as is the music, however that's about all this had going for it as the core gameplay becomes frustrating and boring after a while.

This game brings back memories, my grandparents had this game at their house and whenever I'd visit as a kid I would play this when I spent the night over there. To be honest, as a kid I didn't mind this, but it still was kind of frustrating, and had clunky platforming and I could never beat the game as a kid due to the difficulty. I remember for the life of me I could not get past the lava levels, the furthest I remember making it in this was to the lava boss but I could never beat that, and the funny thing is I think after that level was the final World. Anyway, its a game I have nostalgia for because it brings me back to the times I'd visit my grandparents and play around on their computer long before we had our own, but at the same time even as a kid I saw big flaws in this and didn't like it as much as the classic 2D Sonic games. Sonic would take a few more years to make a successful 3D game, and this is a bit of a mess with clunky platforming and awkward level design, but its not horrible either, just not that good, and the graphics are pretty ugly.
