Funnily enough the only reason they ever made it paid because one of them got cancer and it’s America so there’s no state healthcare and they had to fund his cancer treatment.
Of all the people in the gaming industry who genuinely deserve the financial windfall, Tarn and Zach deserve it most, when you think of all the massive games DF has heavily influenced and they barely made much from it previously
One of my favorite parts of playing video games is having an experience that is wholly unique. Sure, we can reminisce about how a game ended and how that made us feel, but hearing of the triumphs and (subsequently) ultimate demises of these rotund little fellows is like peering into a history all on its own.
The thing about DF is that it will likely never be fully completed, nor can you actually complete this game. It's more of a fun program that you return to periodically throughout your life to mess around in. If you want an honest answer, a big bulk of the promised mechanics probably wont be fully implemented for another 5-10 years. You can find a full list of everything they plan on adding on the Dwarf Fortress website. The game currently is sitting around 50% completion, which is enough to experience the core gameplay loop as well as explore the stuff that the world generates.
I would wait until Adventure Mode, the roguelike mode of the game, gets re-implemented which should maybe be done by the end of the year.
