Harry Mason wakes up in Silent Hill after a car accident and notices that his daughter Cheryl went missing. He enters the fog-shrouded town to search for Cheryl, and unbeknownst to him, her disappearance is involved with a strange cult.
There was an error saving your submission.
While driving to the sleepy resort town of Silent Hill with his daughter, Cheryl, father Harry Mason swerves to avoid a young girl in the road and crashes his car. Waking up to find Cheryl missing, Harry sets out into the mysterious, fog-covered town and battles twisted nightmares to find his daughter.
The original Silent Hill is an extremely influential game that is hard to play 20+ years after its release. Sometimes it's still stunning, but most of the time it feels clunky. However, I do not regret that I finally played and finished it.

Silent Hill was probably the first (and only come to think of it) game that I yearned for, rushed out and bought, and then wasn't spectacularly let down by once I plugged it in. This is not to say that every game in my life has been a disappointment, but for the most part I don't actually get physically excited by a game's existence before I buy it. It's more like "eh, I think I will probably like this" and then find I am either pleasantly surprised or resignedly dispirited. This game was different.
I first became aware of Silent Hill via a non-playable demo on a magazine disc. It was a short video with chilling music and unusually for a person not easily swayed by these things, I was completely sucked in. I watched it three times in a row and got an internal twinge. I had to get this game into my life.
Finally the game found its way into the shops and praise the patron saint of game development, it was an absolute gem. I loved the atmosphere, I loved the puzzles, I loved the whole psychological brain-fuck thing. At no point is the game a chore, and there is a good balance of action, thinking and storyline. In some ways Silent Hill restored my faith in games and rekindled my interest.

incredibly astonishing game with great story, amazing soundtrack and visuals, aging well even 25 years later.
the industrial soundbase of this game fits well the eerie and dark atmosphere, as well with the gruesome and uncanny-ish looking monsters
the story, albeit somewhat predictable, is really unique and well-paced with really good emotional beats.
what hold backs this game is the gameplay which although is kind of charming and helps with the game immersion, is really clunky and obnoxious at time, giving the experience an artificial difficulty that it didn't need to have.

Silent Hill (1999) marks the beginning of a franchise that, while not inventing survival horror, added layers to it that had never been seen before; If the tension in the Spencer Mansion was more physical and mundane, that of the streets and structures of Silent Hill was psychological and surreal. Obviously, the bloody corridors and demonic, deformed creatures scare players following Harry Mason's journey, but there is a suggestive aspect throughout the game that invites us to delve deeper into the story of Silent Hill and the cult that dominated everything the town represented.
It's interesting how the game doesn't give away all the answers at once, or maybe not even at all. I played it only once, but I felt that I only absorbed half of its message and understood fewer secrets than I imagine now. Even though this may frustrate some players, I interpret this characteristic as a hallmark of the franchise, making it quite different from other survival horror games. Harry Mason is an ordinary character, and we know very little about him, but every clue given about his personality or his past suggests that he is the wrong person in an even more wrong context. He is kind, a good father, courageous, but at the same time human: the game's mechanics show that he doesn't know how to fight physically or with weapons, nor does he comprehend the demonic and psychological explanation of the city he's in. He is a bit like us, the players.
Viewing the game from this perspective makes the experience more immersive and perhaps a bit depressing as well. In addition to the grim story, the gameplay and the soundtrack are uncomfortable and convey an inexplicable sense of unease, contributing to the game's horror atmosphere. Silent Hill (1999) is a great introduction to the franchise, in my opinion. I truly believe that it effectively works with its elements that would become trademarks of the subsequent games within its technical limitations and features a very interesting cast of characters that have become unforgettable for fans. However, in terms of narrative, some things are confusing and require extra attention to details or internet research, which means the game doesn't stand alone.
It is an essential game for survival horror fans, and even if you don't like it or find it strange, you will undoubtedly not be the same person after it.

The one track for one of the bad endings is so unfitting lol Also that blooper high reel. Gotta love the presentation of Japanese games of the late 90s and early noughties
Personally, I would say that this is just a tad better than the original Resident Evil. I think the puzzle-solving and setting interconnectivity is better in RE, maybe the story as well by a small margin, but this has the better atmosphere, soundtrack, and artstyle. It's also a LOT easier, which is nice since I suck at survival horror lol
