Title
Quirky scenarios, dedicated world building and a more story-driven approach lent Shining Force II the appeal of a fairy tale adventure, indulging in lengthier cutscenes to expand their type of whimsical medieval-fantasy. Compared to its predecessor - however, their scenes deliver a much more convincing sense of drama, despite the basic, often clumsy dialogue, and allow room for a fair degree of characterisation. Although much of the cast are just there for combat's sake, the exceptions easily outclass their previous efforts.

The gameplay also shows signs of improvement, enriched by QoL features, new classes and mechanics that even include a few imports from the debut. But overall, it continued in the same vein as before: A traditional SRPG containing simple missions and JRPG traits (free-roaming, unique towns, escape from battle, etc.), albeit with very open - if somewhat vague progression this time. Simply put, it was a rare success in storytelling for its era. After mimicking Wizardry (with Shining in the Darkness) and Fire Emblem (despite their director's intentions), Shining has found an identity of its own.

Title
The sequel to Shining Force brings more to the table than its predecessor, improving on an already great game. This game made a few major changes over the first. No more is the game divided into chapters, rather one can freely wander the land. The game is much longer as well with more battles and more things to do and the developers even included a bonus battle after the credits that features the games hardest foes. The storyline is a bit more developed in Shining Force II as well. There is more back story, more dialogue within the game, and more explanation. Overall, this game keeps the best qualities of Shining Force 1 and improves on its shortcomings.

The battle system and team setup is essentially the same as Shining Force, both are tactical role playing games. The battle system is turn-based. During each turn you can move a character a set number of grid squares and perform an action such as attack or cast a spell. Along your adventures, you will encounter twenty nine other characters that can possibly join your party. I believe twelve can be in your party at one given time. In classic rpg fashion, expect to spend a bunch of time power leveling your characters, perhaps even more than was required in Shining I. The game is definitely harder than its predecessor.

Stick with this game and you should love it. The music is every bit as strong as the original and the added game length and nonlinearity add to its enjoyability. I loved the battle system of Shining I and I love it with Shining II as well. For those that love late game power leveling to the extreme, the after credits battle will put your skills to the test as you face some of the hardest bosses in the game, all at once. The best items in the game require you to find Mithril stones scattered throughout your travels and refine them at the blacksmith near the end of the game. There is just so much to do that was not available in many of the rpgs before its time. The music is spectacular as well. Very little to complain about here. The world map is more open than it was with Shining Force I and so where you need to go is not always so clear. Be sure to pay attention to the dialogue to get clues as to where to go next. As a point of observation, Shining Force II is a bit more childish than Shining Force I. The original featured somewhat mature looking characters. You start off looking like children and have to wait until promotion to at least look like teenagers. In fact, the first few minutes of the game place you in a school house with your friend; your first fight has you wielding a wooden weapon.

Shining Force II certainly makes a case for the best RPG on the Sega Genesis. As I mentioned above, Shining Force II is like playing a refined version of Shining Force I. I found it not quite as initially engaging, but stick with it as this game quickly surpasses its predecessor in quality gameplay.
