Title
Atlus absorbed much of Career Soft (their subsidiary devs, and the studio behind Langrisser and Growlanser) for Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor, a work that transposed MegaTen's low fantasy backdrop and press-turn battling to a traditional SRPG. No stranger to tactical gameplay themselves, Career Soft's contributions are also felt in the story structure: An abundance of VN choices fed to a branching narrative which culminates in character-specific endings. In a sense, they expanded on Atlus' alignment-driven model via the tools of Growlanser. Beyond the premise, nothing here breaks any new ground for the genre, but the characters are memorable (as if Persona 3's cast were filtered through Disgaea's artstyle) and customizable (thanks to blue mage-esque skill-learning + transferring) enough to elevate this game above its peers.

    Stopped playing at the last fight of day 3 because how tedious it is. Spawing new enemies that heal the boss right as you get to him and making the only attack that can hit him potentially miss!!! What the fuck were they thinking?

    The combat in general is solid but the other half of the game, the writing, is totally inane. The characters are paper cut outs and it feels like the plot never actually starts going anywhere. If I have to read one more text about "what do you think Naoya is planning" or "Are the Shomonkai trustworthy", I'm gonna scream. It's a great example of a narrative that's so occupied with presenting THEMES and MESSAGES that it forgets to actually do anything interesting with them.

    Was fun, but managing demons is absolutely tedious since demons become obsolete so quickly. stopped around day 6.

    Characters are pretty bad as well, with most of the middle days spent cleaning up the mess of two of the most idiotic. seriously, midori might one of my most hated characters in anything ever, absolutely loathed her lol
