Title
One Word... Epic
Shadow of the Colossus is seen as one of the greatest games of all time. When it came out for the PS2 in 2005, it blew many people away. The 2018 remake is no exception.

The story tells of a man dubbed as "Wanderer" going to a place known as "The Forbidden Land" with his horse, Agro, to revive a dead woman named Mono. His connection to her is never made clear. However, a popular theory is that she holds some form of romantic interest in Wanderer. To revive her, he is tasked with exploring The Forbidden Land, finding, and then slaying 16 Giants known as Colossi. The plot is very simple but it contains an out-of-left field ending that blew me away.

The graphics are so beautiful. The PS2 version looked good for its time but it still had its own issues. With the remake, the graphics are stunning. I wouldn't call it as impressive as the original due to the fact that games in 2018 look just as good now. However, it still is very beautiful.

The music is just insane. One of my favorite video game soundtracks now. It gives me literal chills just listening to it.

Now with the controls. The gameplay is centered around your stamina or your "Grip" during fights where you gotta be holding onto the Colossus, you gotta regulate your grip so you don't fall. The Grip can be increased with Lizard Tails and defeating the Colossi. However, it goes up very little which keeps you at your toes. This goes the same for your health. It's also about wind-up. The longer you wind up the more damage you will inflict. But it's also something you gotta regulate with your grip.

The controls on the PS2 version are infamous for being very clunky and weird. Unfortunately, the controls in the remake are no exception. It's definitely better. But getting on your horse, climbing, shooting your bow, and using your sword is still a bit hard to do correctly and it's easily the biggest issue with the experience.

The game is short but it is well worth the playthrough. It's a very sad game because of the fact that these Colossi weren't doing anything wrong, to begin with. It's a story that makes you question if you are the hero or not. It's a story about selfishness (At least that's how I viewed it)

The best part about this game is how fighting the Colossi makes you feel so insignificant and small. The game has issues, sure. But when that triumphant music picks up while you climb on the backs of these creatures... Nothing feels more satisfying than that

People complaining about the controls are missing the point. The step-by-step awkwardness of the controls allows you to tactilely feel how big each Colossus is, especially when they are throwing their weight. If you could scale them as easy as something like Assassins Creed, the entire game would fall apart.

Buttery smooth controls aren't always the best creative decision for a game.

People always say video games are art yet refuse to believe that a game's difficulty or controls can be an artistic decision itself.

I have seriously mixed feelings about this game. On one hand, the art direction and overall atmosphere is top notch, but the gameplay can be immensely tedious and simplistic. Maybe it's just me: I really dislike the "cinematic" approach to videogames, and I have the impression this is one of the games that might have started the trend back in the day. Not sure. Anyhow, the point is I couldn't get too engaged with this due to the clunkiness of the controls and lack of any real challenge. It's also quite frustrating to just hang on the colossi without any real interaction, just waiting for the right time to stab them. Also, some of the monsters were basically the same, only in a different environment or with a slightly different design.
Don't get me wrong. I don't play videogames "for fun", but I do expect to be at least intellectually or emotionally engaged with a piece of work. Shadow of the Colossus just didn't do it for me. It drags for too long and I don't think the concept or story compensates for the lack of any real gameplay. Maybe it will grown on me, maybe it won't. For now, I just feel a bit disappointed.

that's fair, i don't think it's for everyone. the cinematic approach blew me away at the time and it still feels really fresh. i can't help but feel immersed and feel like i'm in the middle of a movie scene while i'm fighting the colossus. but yeah, i get how the controls could feel clunky for some.

Surprised there isn't discourse on the original vs remake given I would argue Bluepoint changed the art style as drastically as they did for Demon's Souls, which is a major point of contention for that game (though personally I like all four games).

I think the PS3 remake is not as disrupting to the atmosphere and style of the original as the PS4 one. The PS4 remake looks somewhat plastic and clean in all the wrong ways and gets it very wrong. The PS3 one still is able to capture the magic of the original, I think. At least it was a very impactful experience for me. Still wish I could play the PS2 version though, its use of fogginess is similar to what the Silent Hill games did (which were also botched in a remaster lol).

Oh well just realized the PS3 one is considered a remaster while the PS4 one is the remake, so maybe that's why. But still, the barrier between remaster and remake is not very clear so point still counts. I usually take these two words as being interchangable anyway lol

The PS4 version was made by Bluepoint, whom also blandified Demon's Souls the same way.
