Linking When you mention an album, artist, film, game, label, etc - it's recommended to link to the item the first time you mention it. Doing so will make it easier to search for your post and give it more visibility. To link an item, use the search box above, or find the shortcut that appears on the page that you want to link. You can customize the link name of shortcuts by using the format [Artist12345,Custom Name].

Secret of Mana (a.k.a Seiken Densetsu 2) built upon the debut's Zelda/RPG confluence via wider areas, A.I. controlled allies and brawler mechanics that established a new standard in action-RPGs. The inclusion of knockdowns and pushing - in particular, paint an unusual nuance to combat, adding a sort of methodical, space control-oriented layer of strategy to its otherwise brisk pace. Far from a straightforward mashfest, the crowded fights are where those ideas truly shine, centered on balancing stamina regen with enemy wakeup timing to both optimize damage and inhibit movement, while evading attacks, positioning foes and managing the party in the process. Its battle system is an attraction in itself, one that largely redeems the trivial and sometimes lacking story, characters, setting and dialogue.
On the other hand, the JRPG elements not only feel out of place but often detract from gameplay - both in battle (boss fights, unavoidable spells) and out (world navigation and dungeons), and its innovations (whether co-op or the ring menu system) are mostly technical or cosmetic. But this remains a colorful, accessible, entertaining update to the original Game Boy title.

have to agree with most in this comment box - the visuals are stellar, music is quite good, but the combat and gameplay just feel awful. Honestly prefer Final Fantasy Adventure to this one quite a bit.
A lot of the acclaim I think this first had was that RPGs were a fucking hard sell in the West. Most people were not playing RPGs on the NES there and surely most people weren't getting RPGs to run on their PCs
So for a lot of people, this was their first step into this kind of territory. Not unlike how the N64, GoldenEye was among the first shooters people played.
I really like the music in this game, but all the nostalgia in the world can't really make me love it forever.
This game is about the art style, the score, and story. They tried their best with the mechanics but we can all agree they did a bad job in that department.
Still, though, I've been chasing the high of playing this as a 10 year old in 1993 ever since.
I love this on a vibes level (Into the Thick of It is one of my favorite video game songs ever) but goddamn you guys weren't lying about the combat being ass. Zelda 2 still gets way more hate but I think it was a much better take on the "action JRPG" thing.
