I loved classic Rust, but nu-Rust is unplayable. Maybe classic Rust was bad too and I have just grown up, but I have fond memories of it. I played the game again in October 2020 and the entire game is nonstop grinding and I felt exhausted after a while. I was on a x20 server and the grinding was too much for me so my friend and I switched over to a x50 server but not even that was enough. I realized that I just wasted a week of my life doing nothing but grinding all day and then I became majorly depressed. I could have been playing any other game instead... or doing anything else at all, really.
The only redeeming quality is that playing the game normally invokes the same reaction as griefing. Ergo, you can make grown men excessively upset and scream racial slurs at you with much less effort than any other multiplayer game. People screaming at you over the Internet (and especially a video game) is never not funny.
Perhaps this is because playing the game normally entails raiding people's bases, but what normal person reacts like that? The Internet in general is like that, but it's especially bad here. It's a multiplayer video game, so it obviously attracts the most emotionally unstable people. Unbeknownst to the player, he has been baited and then further descends mentally because of the sheer amount of time you need to sink into the game. According to my calculations, nobody who plays this game has a job and spends approximately 16 hours a day doing mind-numbing grinding only to lose 70+ hours worth of progress to a gang of racist 12 year olds. This cycle continues endlessly. No wonder the people who play this are so unhinged.
I encourage everybody to roofcamp to make more of these people cry. Just kidding, that would require playing the game and I wouldn't recommend that.

one time i accidentally killed one of my friends with a double barreled shotgun while he was downed. in my defense the guy that knocked him got knocked himself shortly after, and I was going for the killing blow; the only issue was that his body was clipping inside my friends'. i also called him a "shitter" or something toxic like that, which only made me look more like an idiot. i even got knocked myself shortly after the incident by a random who happened to walk into oxums (the place we were at at the time), and my friends refused to pick me up so I got really bitter and told them I was gonna get off, and then they felt bad and told me to come back. another time, one of my friends got knocked when looting oxums, and he got mad and yelled at the guy who knocked him. the guy who knocked him only said in a high-pitched nasally voice, "someone's a little gassy" and then killed him.

the game really does need to reinvent its balancing.
The progression is based around 1x resource/loot gathering. however 1x servers are an INSANE grind. Upping the gather multiplier just absolutely destroys that satisfaction of progression and is overall just not a rewarding experience.
Its either a time suck or a waste of time, theres no inbetween.
If you are "grinding" you are playing the game incorrectly. Rust is balanced around snowballing and balancing risk vs reward on what you leave your base with. I have 2500 hours in this game because I am an adrenaline junkie and this game gives me genuine fight or flight reactions. 10/10. Also love how this game forces you to be smart and on your toes in a way no other game ever has. The loop of spawning in, splitting your team up to specific roles like getting cards/farming for starter base, and rushing to evict your neighbors so your clan gets to own that part of the map has led to genuinely almost all of my favorite experiences in gaming.
