Rogue Legacy

An ugly-looking metroidvania/roguelite hybrid which forces its player to grind for upgrades. The main problem with this game for me was that a character just didn't feel enjoyable to control, especially in platforming segments.

Despite this game's faults (way too short, boring/nonexistent story, repetitive) I find the core gameplay so tight and addictive that it's really hard not to like it anyway. I don't often find myself sucked in by a game like I was by this one; it was hard to put it down from the first time I played it to when I beat the final boss. It was a lot of fun to see the unique combo of Metroidvania with the Roguelite genre, and although Dead Cells does that same thing and excels in a lot of ways that this game failed, I can't look back on my playthrough of Rogue Legacy without a good sense of appreciation and fond memories. I found that the game really fizzled out hard at the end, but the meat of the game was juicy enough for me to love it all the same. The fact that it had very polished and cute graphics and a great sense of humor certainly didn't hurt its cause.

Rogue Legacy is, like the name implies, a roguelike. And also like that implies, i will never reach the end of it. That said i had a lot of fun in the over 10 hours i put in it, before the repetition started to take its toll.

It has a cute cartoony style, that fits with the game goofy nature and comedic undertones.

its a solid 2d sidescroller with randomized dungeons. There is lot of loot to get, and the cool thing is that you can use that money to improve yourself for future runs even if you die (since you always do, there is no way to leave the dungeon unless you die). Its really addictive to bring that money back and making your character slowly get better and more capable over time. Its still a very skill driven game, but it really helps when an enemy hit only takes 20 hp instead of 50. The bosses are huge challenges and truely test the players ability.

So yea cool game this one. The sort of game thats good to play in short burst, and then you are still grabbed to it and its 2AM.

Rogue Legacy isn't really bad, but it's also not as exciting as it initially seems. It's a platformer with randomized dungeons. When you die, your descendant gives the dungeon another shot with different abilities. My biggest problem with the game was that the abilities descendants have seemed to have nothing to do with their ancestors. As far as I could tell, the choices seemed random, so what was the point of framing the game this way? You could have just had it been a bunch of clones and made the same concept. The gameplay itself feels like a number of old 2D platformers, mainly Castlevania, and didn't seem to bring anything new to the table (nor did it seem to do anything particularly well). I dunno, I think this game is pretty average. Not bad for the price, but not fantastic either.
