I love the ending in this one. The final confrontation with Gehn is the stuff of legends, because of John Keston's quietly brilliant performance. Riven's climax has the audacity to present itself as a battle of wills–and an un-interactive one at that! Still one of the best endings ever.

I loved Myst, but they went too far in this one. It's excessively cryptic at some points (and never gets to a comfortable level either) to be really immersive.
Beautiful landscapes and all that, but I was tired of running around the whole place more often than not, trying to figure out what I was missing. I even tried to figure out the language by the characters hanging on the walls of that hut. When I figured out that what I was missing was a shillowette mixed with a floating object in the sea... I threw the game away.
After finally beating this, I'm having the same feeling I had when I finished Outer Wilds, Obra Dinn, and The Witness; namely, the feeling of "holy shit that was awesome and I'm heartbroken I can't ever play it again"
not only can you not play it for the first time again, but it's one of those games that's so dependant on worldbuilding and slowly revealing information through exploration that returning to it is basically just sightseeing. heartbreaking to me, since this game has one of the most magical and wonderful atmosphere's I've ever experienced in a game. finding new areas, watching each cutscene, figuring out each puzzle and machine was so fascinating and engaging and made me feel so genuinely full of awe.
this needs to be up in the top 50 again like it was when I joined this site. such a special game.
Haven't finished Riven but I have to agree. These games are so immersive and life-like in the way they "trap" you in their own mechanics and logic, you become an active participant rather than just a player.

I don’t really know what a beautiful puzzle is, but this game has beautiful puzzles.
Still hyped up, regardless. Riven is absolutely fuckin magical and while I adore it’s original aesthetic, a well-made update to its graphics could be INCREDIBLE
