Title
It is truly astonishing that this game came after the first Resident Evil and its remake because this game is inferior in every single way. The atmosphere isn't as tense, the level design isn't as good, and the addition of a second playable character adds nothing to the game other than making puzzles more tedious and time consuming. My largest grievance with this game, and something that baffles me as to how it made it past play testing, is that they completely removed the inventory chests in favor of just spreading your items all over the ground. Because each room can only have so many items on the ground, you'll end up with several rooms full of items sprawled across the floor that you'll have to come back to later to clumsily try to pick up the correct item. You'll spend literally hours just running items back and forth throughout the mansion in this game.

It isn't the worst thing to come out of the Resident Evil series, but it is, at best, mediocre.

Title
In hindsight it's so strange that the remake of the original Resident Evil released just a few months before 0 and looks the same, but it feels so completely like two different games.

0 is a flawed mishmash of half-baked ideas that are underdeveloped and meaningless at best and unfair at worst. The no item box mechanic sounds cool in theory, but effectively you end up using certain rooms as the big drop point for inventory anyway so it renders it pretty moot (or insufferable such as with the notorious hookshot the game loves to reuse at the worst opportunities for you personally). The partner system is also cool in theory, but you end up using Billy for everything with Rebecca as a sort of pack-mule when you can breathe on her and she'll go to "Danger" health immediately, not to mention that for about 70% of the game the two of them get separated for different contrived reasons anyway.

The combat feels very off as well, especially coming off of the remake. Biggest complaint is how easy it can be to get stunlocked by some enemies and it feels in general like enemies just don't react to bullets at all, so its almost impossible to avoid taking damage when what you're shooting at has super armor anyway.

The setting and map design is awesome with the train in the first 20 minutes but takes a nosedive afterwards when you're stuck going through boring brown buildings and labs and such we've seen countless times in other games already (not to mention map design that makes literally no sense with spatial reasoning but thats a nitpick on something with a mountain of true flaws).

Even if 0 wasn't coming immediately off of the back of the first game's much superior remake I don't think there's a lot you're missing skipping this one. It is a very pretty game and the first and last areas are where the art direction shines, but otherwise it's a real "maybe" play for one time through if you can get past the flaws.

Title
I remember playing this when it came out back on original gamecube and could never get past the first train. This game introduces a crazy new mechanic in the RE franchise of having a partner. you'll be doing a lot of swapping between characters overcoming various obsticles in the enviorments and doing light puzzle solving. It plays exactly like Resident evil remake, so it feels familiar and refined. the environments are really memorable, and all the locations and graphics/art is spot on. Billy is a rather generic bad boy character who is ultimately more forgettable than rebecca.

Like almost all resident evil games, theres a ton of trial & error, retrying parts over & over and loading your save over & over just to refine specific routes and limiting item usage. Once you get off the train you're welcome to a familliar looking mansion for you to explore, in classic RE1 style! so it's more of the same, but to me its clearly not as amazing as resident evil 1 / remake was. The boss fights can be frustrating because the hotboxes can be hard to figure out if you dont know what youre doing

Lots of new enemy types, and its total fucking bullshit at a few parts. Mainly the monkeys. And the part at the church. Once I arrived to the church some shit happened where it was absolutely required that I had to backtrack to the beginning of the mansion (because I made the wrong choice? or missed an item?) So after some fumbling around I realize I have to backtrack ok..no big deal...

So I backtrack with billy, and suddenly theres 2 hit KO monkeys everywhere on the path. Safe to say I quit the game for about a week in frustration. I eventually managed to do a flawless run for the item, after looking up youtube routes & avodiing monkey attacks carefully, but fuck that man.

Overall its a good early resident evil style game, slightly less amazing and well done than the originals, feels a bit cliched and "been there done that" and honestly I'm not sure if i'd even prefer the partner system vs solo... A memorable game, with great locations, just not a classic!

Tiptoes over the edge of good, but this is easily one of the most aggravating Resi experiences. The new partner mechanic combined with the removal of item boxes but the option to drop items wherever you want adds a fair amount of variety to what is otherwise a standard crawl through a secret Umbrella lab. But the continuation of the REmake graphical set-up and occasionally tapping into the deeper levels of meta-strategy that made REmake so great just reminded me of the gulf in quality between that and this. Every death felt cheap either because of too fast enemies, unfair camera angles, unnecessary backtracking or because the partner mechanic is that cumbersome.

Its ideas about what to do with the survival horror genre without betraying it give it legs above Silent Hill 4 or Code Veronica, where the wheels were really starting to come off, but this is still a tedious adventure more than I want to admit.

Title
Resident Evil 0 could have been great had it actually built its template off Remake instead of trying to do its own thing. I can respect that the developers were tired of making the same game and wanted to do something different so they tried introducing a partner co-op system and instead of item boxes had you drop items. Now these ideas sound good on paper right, cool you have a partner who can help you so you save ammo and can solve more complex puzzles and dropping items means I don't have to backtrack to those item boxes. Well its not that easy. The co-op system is odd, and your partner wastes ammo and items in their own free will so you better make sure you give them only what you don't care about wasting. The other issue is the partner system gets annoying because there are many times you'll be switching between partners to solve puzzles or progress and the novelty wears off fast as it gets annoying and tedious. The other issue is your partner can get themselves killed so you have to constantly be switching between the partners during tough combat. The other issue is that the forced co-op removes much horror, the reason Remake, Resident Evil 2, and hell even Code Veronica were such effective horror games was because the game didn't have forced co-op you were alone for 95% of those games, sure each of those games did have small co-op segments but those segments only lasted 5 minutes at the longest. This game there are only a few small segments where your partner gets separated but I'd say at least 80% of the game you are with your partner.

Now the second glaring issue is the item drop and inventory management. That's right no item boxes means you need to drop items. So if you leave an item far back because you dropped it you have to go all the way back to get it. There's one segment of the game the item makes you use an item you haven't used in a while and chances are your first time you will have dropped it after the first part of the game, so that's right, you need to backtrack far for that item instead if you had an item box and could just have got it out from there. The dropping system is more annoying and makes item management and backtracking more tedious. I mean those are the 2 big glaring issues, but there are mild issues too. Another issue is lack of interesting environments and most of the bosses in this being giant bugs and animals. The new enemies in this game weren't that interesting and hell they were kind of lame to the extent that they haven't appeared in any Resident Evil games outside this game. The story itself is okay, its typical Resident Evil B-rate story, Marcus was an alright villain even if at times he felt a bit over the top like an anime villain, but there were some cool segments like seeing Wesker and Birkin and what they were doing prior to the events of the main game.

But gameplay wise it plays similar to remake. You progress through areas like mansions, stations, labs, and such while fighting off zombies and solving basic puzzles. The puzzles in this range from okay and mildly fun to just tedious and frustrating, especially ones that involve having to constantly being trading partners and switching supplies. I mean yeah its still Resident Evil at its core, and I did like the atmosphere, Rebecca is an underused character and it was interesting seeing the events of what went down before Resident Evil, and the graphics are nice. But it does have plenty of frustrating and tedious moments and the game does feel like a step back from the progress Remake made.

the environments, music and overall atmosphere in this game is among the best in the series. the enemy and zombie variety alone is so good. shame it's the black sheep over issues that could have so easily been fixed (item box, no two slot items, no damn monkeys, better hookshot implementation or just scrap it). 3.13 is still too harsh imo
