Title
The following review is an excerpt from my piece on both Resident Evil 4s. This excerpt covers my full thoughts on the original game.

When I started Resident Evil 4 (2005), I noticed the controls were weird. Tilting the joystick forward moves Leon forward, and tilting it left and right turns him from side to side. The player can make him do a quick turn by pushing the joystick back while pressing X. (on a PS5 controller). The player has to hold down the left bumper to pull out Leon’s knife and then use the right trigger to swing it. It is not possible to move while aiming a weapon. The controls are clunky. But this control scheme works remarkably well for an action game with roots in survival horror. Enemy encounters are always tense because it is not easy to get away from them. This puts pressure on the player to make decisions and make them quickly. “How much ammo do I have left for each gun? What kind of weapon do I want to use? Should I try to kill this enemy or run past it to conserve ammo? Do I want to heal now and get some health back or wait until I find a red herb and heal fully?” These are all questions I have to ask myself while trying to land shots on enemies, and it keeps the gameplay constantly engaging. Even though Resident Evil 4 (2005) is the game that took the series away from its survival horror roots, the clunky controls help maintain the previous games’ tension in an action context.

The level design is varied and supports the controls' playstyle. The game has three main areas, the village, the castle, and the island. They all have their own unique set pieces, puzzles, and enemies. The village eases the player into the game as they learn the controls. The enemies are relatively simple. Most of them are plagas-infected villagers. Eventually, Leon will encounter chainsaw-wielding enemies that can kill him with a single attack. Some enemies carry throwing axes or dynamite sticks, but it is nothing the player cannot handle with a bit of planning and perseverance. The castle adds cultists with new weapons, plagas-infected dogs, suits of armor, and wolverine-like beasts that can slice the player in half if they aren’t killed using the weak points on their back. This area is filled with puzzles that use both Leon and Ashley, encouraging experimentation and exploration.

The game’s final area, the island, houses the game’s most action-packed moments. It feels like a warzone. The enemies are much more challenging now, and some have guns. The player has to duel Jack Krauser, another highly trained soldier, to the death. It also is home to an underground lab filled with Regeneradores, the only enemy in the game that legitimately scares me. The whole level builds to one final interaction with Lord Saddler, the game’s main antagonist, and the final test of the player’s skill. The game remains fresh and exciting to play throughout all three of these areas. There are no dull moments in Resident Evil 4 (2005). It’s filled with meticulously crafted level design and has a campaign that could only be rivaled by Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, another masterpiece from that era.

Resident Evil 4's gameplay is at its best when fighting bosses. The tension felt when fighting regular enemies is not even comparable to the bosses. The bosses test the player’s mastery of the game’s combat. Leon is just one guy with a few guns, and the bosses are giant monsters of bioterrorism. The bosses require the player to get aggressive even though they seem outmatched. Players must land shots on the bosses, often at specific weak points, while dodging melee and projectile attacks, manipulating the environment to their advantage, and managing resources. Every boss is well-tuned to the game’s combat, and they are all thrillingly fun to fight (except for U-3, that boss sucks).

While Resident Evil 4's gameplay is just about perfect, the story is a little dated. Most of the characters are paper-thin. They have a pretty standard representation of their archetypes. Ashley is a scared and sometimes irrational young woman who acts like a spoiled teenager, fitting for the President’s daughter. Luis is a side-kick Leon can never truly trust, and he’s “great with the ladies” (In 2005, this just meant he would make uncalled-for comments about women’s bodies, apparently) Ada is a femme-fatale foil to Leon. She’s intelligent and charming and can easily manipulate Leon despite her betrayal of him in Resident Evil 2. The game’s villains are also one-note. Lord Sadler is the mastermind behind the organization, a zealot cult leader who controls just about everything. Ramón Salazar is the clear standout; he’s short, has a silly hat, and antagonizes “Mr. Kennedy” throughout the castle. Bitores Méndez is just… sort of there?

The plot itself is relatively simple. Leon Kennedy, a survivor of the Raccoon City outbreak from Resident Evil 2, now works for the feds and needs to save President Graham’s daughter, Ashley, from a cult in Spain. There is a bit more to it that ties the game into Resident Evil’s greater lore, but most of it is not explored in the game’s original release. What Resident Evil 4's plot lacks in complexity, it more than makes up for in charm. The game is full of B-movie humor, witty one-liners, and over-the-top scenes. So while I would not nominate the game for “best writing.” It more than gets the job done; the story presentation fits the game perfectly.

After rolling the credits on Resident Evil 4, I was thoroughly impressed. Despite being an eighteen-year-old Nintendo GameCube game, the gameplay had me just as engaged as the modern third-person shooters it inspired, like The Last of Us. I could easily see why it’s regarded as one of the best games of all time, and I think it is easily one of, if not the best, game on the GameCube.

Title
I generally dislike when people dismiss a game because of nostalgia and I've seen it done so many times with my favorites from the 90s, but after playing (and completing) Resident Evil 4, I can't help but fall into that same trap. I can't see any reason for this game to be so acclaimed, it feels incredibly dated and I'm just very surprised that anyone playing it first in 2019 would be totally satisfied with it.

I didn't play much games from the PS2 era (or the 2000s decade in general), so I don't how it compared to other games from the same time period, but this one definitely does not feel timeless and it's very much stuck in the past with outdated game mechanics. Immediately when starting the game I just couldn't believe how bad the control were. You can't move left or right! Your character can only move forward or backwards, and requires to turn his head to move in another direction. That wouldn't be so bad in an adventure game or whatnot, but this is a pure action game that requires you to dodge and evade enemies. It's not like strafe controls weren't invented, games from the 90s had them with Doom or Goldeneye has some basic examples. This makes playing the game extremely frustrating, as I value fluidity of the controls in an action to be the most important aspect. You need to be able to do what you want intend to do, but this outdated control system definitely doesn't let you to do. So you have to deal with what you have to get things done, and sometimes that requires you to move around in circles constantly (the battles with the clawed enemies are insanely bad design), there's just so many instances that the bad controls make the game frustrating and annoying.

The controls are not only the bad thing about the game, there is also quick time events. Not one here or there, but multiple ones in each of the chapters and a lot of the times when you fail them you have to start over again from a previous checkpoint. There is nothing fun about quick time events, and I'm glad developers have ditched them over the course of this decade, but Resident Evil 4 will remind you just how a key part they were of older games. I feel that they bring nothing to the game, and just adds more frustration than anything else.

The game itself is mostly action adventure, there's a big story line here with 5 huge chapters broken down into multiple section and it takes about 18 hours to complete the whole thing. The enemies are very dumb, they just slowly walk to you and when til you shoot them, but they are bullet sponges however so the game's strategy revolves alot around bullet management. You get to figure out which guns are better against which enemies and try to no waste too much ammo for nothing. It's survival based so you will not restore any health, only herbs and first aid sprays will get your health back up (even completing a chapter does not bring back your health). The gameplay is simple enough and it does get quite repetitive, I don't feel that the game needed to be stretched out for so long as even the story brings back always the same events (rescue Ashley, lose Ashley, fight a big boss). I'm all for a longer game, but you have to bring in some variance in there and I don't feel Resident Evil 4 has enough.

I'm not a fan or a hater of the series, I played the first 2 entries in the series back in the 90s, but I can't remember much about them. I didn't dislike them, but I just couldn't get excited about this one. Most everything here is average, it's not a great shooter, it's not a great story, it's not a great survival game, it does many thing ok at best. The best thing about the game is the sound, they really help you figuring what enemies are ahead when you memorized the sound pattern. The Steam HD remake does bring some nice graphics updates, comparing to the original screenshots you can see how much more detailed they are. However it didn't update any of the outdated gameplay aspects, and the controls are just some of the worst I've ever played in an action game. Even Action Adventure games that were released shortly after (I'm thinking Uncharted and inFamous) feels light years ahead in terms of fluidity and overall quality. Perhaps if I played this in 2005 I might have a better opinion of it, but in 2019 I feel that there is countless games that do what this game does in a much better way. Not recommended.

Title
Resident Evil 4, a game I have spent time on different versions but only managed to beat it this summer, on the PC of all things. The first thing I'll say about this is the the style has drastically changed, we saw how it was in Resident Evil: Code Veronica [バイオハザード コード:ベロニカ] but we could have never guessed that we'd have a game like this in the series. While this game felt very fun and fresh, the direction this game led to was a awful decision, Resident Evil 5 [バイオハザード5] and Resident Evil 6 don't hold a candle to even Resident Evil 3: Nemesis [バイオハザード3 ラストエスケープ]. While not as scary as the early titles, the environments do tend to be intimidating, albeit being mostly outdoors. There is a section in the game where you spend most of your time in a big ass castle so it makes for a lot of creepy moments. The music also sets a very good mood especially while roaming around inside.

There are plenty of moments where you legitimately say "OH SHIT!", whether it's an powerful enemy about to fuck you up or a situation where you feel overwhelmed by an assload of enemies. The hordes of enemies that drop tons of treasure and ammo may seem way insane compared to the earlier games but it happens to work here, probably because of the various types of enemies you get to battle. I really like the castle section because of it taking the idea of dealing with ritualistic die hard cultists and executing it quite well. These hooded fucks come in all sorts of robes with various types of weapons and some even opting for solid gold helmets. The imagery all around in this game is just quite great, managing to never letting you feel safe, even for a second.

The boss fights are all VERY well thought out and also very intimidating, every single one of these are both nerve-racking and exciting. After each one begins after the accompanying cut scene, you already want to just run the fuck away. The mini-bosses are great, too. I would also consider scenarios where there are multiples of a very powerful enemy to be considered a "mini-boss" section as well. Another thing I could never leave out is the inclusion of Ashley, the annoying cunt who always seems to get herself in trouble. Whether it's by crouching and whimpering right in front of a big ass enemy, or simply just being fucking stupid and getting in the way of your gunshots. While she may be the reason you fail a lot of the times, she does definitely add to the difficulty and basically becomes your primary objective. There are plenty of times where you have to protect her from afar and you even get to play as her for a brief time.

I guess the last thing we'll get to is the replayability. Upgrading your guns, getting cool ass features, and unlocking awesome costumes are the reasons to play this over and over again. Watch the gold stack up and enjoy the options that the game treats you with. This game is both very exciting and even terrifying at some points, and while having consistent quality, I couldn't give it a 10/10. The reason for this is basically just the stain it left on the franchise. Sure, it sold a fuck ton and got great ratings from pretty much every reviewing website. Did it deserve it? For the most part, I'll say yes. The thing we must understand about this is that while it made Resident Evil [バイオハザード] even more popular, it was for all the wrong reasons. Resident Evil had clearly lost it's identity by this point, but yet this is the game that set the tone for the gaming industry to come. Lifeless over the shoulder 3rd person shooters that everyone and their mom ended up playing. So, I guess the final verdict is "Fuck Resident Evil 4, but it's really good tho". Get yourself this game whether it be on the PS2, GC or on Steam and play through it, I'm sure you'll be begging for more by the time it ends.

not dissing this game because it still is fantastic but man the clunk feels infinitely more noticeable after playing the remake. the herky-jerky feeling to combat due to Leon standing still when you shoot really sucks, and the laser sights feel super misleading, like i'm never aiming where i want to. could just be a skill issue on my part, maybe there's some tweaks to make it better for mouse aiming, but it feels bad to find myself enjoying this game less
