To be clear I probably would have given this game a higher score had I not had issues with the game crashing quite a lot, and one instance of my save file that I had put several hours into getting corrupted and me having to restart my game from the beginning. After this occurred I pretty much just ran through the story as fast as I could, because I was anxious that the corruption would occur again, this also may have hurt my experience.
The aspect of "Red Dead Redemption" that deserves the most praise the game's writing. I've found that Rockstar are very competent when it comes to fun well written characters with big personalities, and this game is no exception. Most of the game's cutscenes are very fun to watch and John Marston is a very likeable protagonist. In addition most of the side characters are full of personality and they like John are also very likeable.
The mechanics of the game are also fantastic, the gunplay is made incredibly fun by the "Dead Eye" ability, which allows you to take down entire groups of enemies with one burst of bullets. However the combat is not particularly difficult save for a few missions near the end of the game, and you could argue that the "Dead Eye" ability makes combat too easy, but for a game like this I'm honestly not all that concerned about challenging combat.
My biggest gripe about this game is the design of the missions at the beginning and very end of the game. These are the missions that involve you herding cattle, hunting, or just doing some farm chore. It's understandable for these types of missions to be at the very beginning of a game to teach you how to play, but I have no clue what they're doing tacked on to the very end of the game. Unfortunately, those final missions would leave me with a bit of a nasty taste in my mouth once I had completed the game.
Ultimately "Red Dead Redemption" is a mix of good and bad, however it's definitely much more good than bad, but there is enough bad that it is at the very least noticeable.
It's definitely worth a play though.

I never played this game before I played the second game, and I really can't complain about that. Every time I finish the second game, I come straight to this game. This is honestly probably the second ugliest game I have ever seen (behind Morrowind), but that's its biggest weakness to me. There are some really dreadful missions, mostly ranch related ones, but a lot of the missions are pretty thrilling, especially towards the end. The characters are all really cool, and there are some surprisingly emotional moments. John's death was one of the saddest in any game to me, dare I say sadder than Arthur's. It's a bit of a shame how little there is to do exclusively as Jack in the very end, but at least vengeance is an option.

Honestly, I would take an RDR1 PC port over GTA 6. But I'd still take an RDR3 prequel (set before RDR2) over this.
Games that I also used to play, incl: Jedi Academy, Hitman Trilogy and MGSV.

I REALLY struggle to play games more than once (not a true gamer, I know). Yet I have played this game twice.
I REALLY hate the current obsession of gaming industry with open world games filled with nothing. Yet I feel at home in Thieves' Landing.just by looking at a drunk-to-the-bones cowboy exit from the saloon, pass out and drop like a log in the mud.
I'm growing INCREASINGLY tired of Rockstar's game design and I'm pretty sure my views on their older releases are clouded by nostalgia. Yet my second playthrough of this game was 1 year ago and I enjoyed it even more than when I played it for the first time, almost 10 years from now.
This game has Liars' Dice. FREAKING LIARS' DICE. Instant 5/5.
Also I learned to play poker at 13 years old. I still remember that one game in Chuparosa with Landon Ricketts.

All the HD-era open-world Rockstar games tend to have the same strengths and weaknesses. Rockstar's greatest strength is the worlds they build, and RDR's richly detailed, evocative, living slice of the American west is a prime example. This is a game where you can just sit and play poker in a smoky saloon for an hour, and in another developer's hands, this would be some half-assed minigame, but Rockstar puts the fine details into every little thing.
The gameplay here feels a bit perfunctory, being more constrained in what you can do compared to GTA due to the setting, and the mission design is definitely not Rockstar at their most inventive. But it does the job of engaging you with the world.
What Rockstar are not so great at is telling good stories inside their worlds. RDR does a creditable job with its characters and dialog, but the overall single-player narrative is weirdly paced, never builds up much narrative momentum, and ultimately doesn't lead anywhere satisfying. I came away feeling a bit let down in the end, but this game is more about the journey and the sights and sounds along the way than the destination.

Poucos produtos da indústria do entretenimento souberam captar com tanta profundidade a atmosfera desoladora do Velho Oeste. Cada centímetro desse jogo é uma obra-prima.

If this new port were a cool twenty or thirty dollars, sure, I'd be curious to see what 'Red Dead Redemption' plays like on Switch. At a baseline of $50 USD that's just further proof of the popular sentiment that both Rockstar and Take Two are greedy, apathetic pigs who don't give a shit about the quality of their Content(TM) so long as margins are met on spreadsheets. It's synonymous w/ everything that's wrong w/ media conglomerates today.
I was already sold on this from how desolate and lonely the whole experience is, but the epilogue completely melts away any of my issues. Could not have been brought home stronger.
Every time R* announce something, they just give me more reasons to despise them.
