I mostly acknowledge Toaplan for their shmups, but here is a biking game by them that is hands down one of the most entertaining games they developed. The game was a smash hit in Japanese arcades and I got quite addicted to it, myself. It's full of that old Toaplan sound charm, and it's thrilling to memorize the levels, breeze through as many enemy racers as you can, collect point items on the way, and go for first place on the courses! Rally Bike is a game that feels great to play and is exceptionally thrilling in the forests of the 4th stage, but every stage offers something nice. The 2nd stage has the most carefree feel to it, the 5th stage is a memorizer that is satisfying to learn through practice, and the 6th stage is just really wacky. While the game is great fun to play, it has many mechanical quirks as well as bugs that can be very frustrating if you care about score. Racers that despawn so that you can't pass them (and gain ranks) and inconsistent item drops to name some. The spawning racer system is all kinds of ridiculous. Also, the two bonus stages take too much time (especially if you score a lot of points). Still, despite its flaws, Rally Bike is a delightful little game that I would warmly recommend to all gamers enthusiastic about old games. Just be warned that the first stage is pretty hard and you will crash a lot in the beginning.
