nightmare labyrinths. sprawling, focused and concise. disparate realms of enclosed torture, each with their own take on a set of explosion tools and nasty, nasty fiends. the paragon of abstract, less linear first person carnage. beautifully brown. after years of first person shooting, many of which just blur into an indiscernible soup of drab real life murder machines, the drab fantasy realms of quake will eternally cast the shadows in which they reside. forever the most first person shooter. id's finest

How much more badass can a game get? Quake is very addictive. It's so simple, but so, so fun. Each level/episode is so well made. The puzzles are surprisingly very difficult at times. The enemies are excellent and pretty diverse. Quake has every weapon you could possibly need. There's so many new features introduced as you progress the game that it feels like a different game by the end. The two major bosses are not difficult but still very interesting fights and different from anything I have seen before. This was actually my first game from the 90s but this game was more fun than a lot of 00s-10s games I have played and even more unique.

This is the real deal, yo.

I can see how people felt this was a poor man's doom or even heretic when it first came out, suffice to say that it's been able to stand on its own thanks to the unique ideas it has that remain fresh even after all these years.

Whereas most games would have you choose their difficulty in the main menu, this one has you decide its difficulty depending on which portal you enter when the game boots up. Initially you have three options, however there's a fourth option should you uncover a secret when you initially go through a portal and towards one of the stages. When I first played this game, I was confused with its setting as one minute you're in a space station and the next you're in a medieval setting, I quickly discovered that's because you travel to different points in time in order to collect glyphs in order to reach the final stage. Of course, like most Id software games, the story is unimportant as its just there as an excuse for the game to take place. The real star of the show is the gameplay, which is once again addictive as all hell, a close second would be the monsters you face as they range from medieval knights to yetis that fire bolts of electricity at you. To combat these fiends, you have a unique arsenal which includes nail guns, grenade launchers and a lightning ray that of course is a suicide stick should you fire it underwater. Much like heretic, this game allows for aiming as well as swimming, making it a huge leap forward from the doom franchise. The real gem in your arsenal is the quad damage which deals four times as much pain as you would without it equipped, although there's a ton of other great power ups as well including invisibility, invulnerability and scuba gear for underwater segments. One final thing to mention is the soundtrack, which was composed by nine inch nails frontman Trent Reznor, if you're a fan of his band, then you can imagine how kick ass the music is in this game.

It's a classic for a reason, whether it's the single player campaign or the multiplayer aspect, it's survived the test of time deservedly so.

This game is still a blast. Great movement controls and just a blast. Also the multiplayer is fantastic. Just a classic game.
