loses some points because it no longer has the eerie medevil feel but instead has a Action Hero Scifi style, the gameplay is quite similar but overall way less memorable than quake 1
6/10

Quake 2 is an odd one. Though it is a sequel to the first quake, it completely reboots the story and style of the game. Now you play as a soldier battling against the strogg invasion, which are a sort of ogre like alien species. The whole game revolves around levels that feel very brown and industrial, which can get tiresome towards the end of the game. It changes a bit with a couple more open areas, but it is definitly nothing near the level of variety of the first game. I also find the theme to be a bit more dull than the cthulu and medieval first entry.
The soundtrack is industrial rock, similar to NIN, which is very similar to the first game. It suceeds of creating a tense and engaging atmosphere to the game, even if there arent all that many memorable tracks in it.
I still maintain that this is a great game, mostly due to the level design and raw combat gameplay. The weapons feel as satisfying to use as on the first game, even if you acquire them at a much slower pace. Much like Quake, the levels are very short chunks of gameplay, usely requiring some sort of short puzzle for you to reach the end. This makes the game playable in small chunks, which is the best way i could find to avoid fatigue.

This game is just vapid. Sure, it's a technical innovation but the design is boring and every gun is weak and has an awful quirk that makes it unfun to use, not to even mention the absurdly long weapon switch time. Generally a bland cookie cutter game
"had one of the most GOATed weapon lineups of any retro shooter."
yeah like the useless pistol, useless shotgun, almost useless super shotgun, grenade launcher that cant shoot more than 6 feet in front of you at best, machine gun with some dogshit recoil mechanic and even worse accuracy, the chaingun that takes longer to wind up than windows xp to boot and wastes ammo after your done shooting it, generally underwhelming rocket launcher and hyper blaster, and the railgun that cant even one-hit the most common enemies you'll face
It seems that with the remaster a lot of people are turning around to say that the game is good now which is surprising to me because it's not THAT different from the original? I guess a little fine tuning goes a long way. Like it's certainly better for sure but as a big fan of the original the experience feels pretty much the same to me
admittedly removing the machine gun's recoil is an objective plus but other than that this game's just okay to me, remaster or not. enemies feel way too durable even just on normal difficulty and the later levels' tendency to spawn enemies behind you with no warning as you encounter enemies in front of you is the most frustrating thing
Going to check the upgrade out, anyway.
