It's fine. It's not anything special, but it's a perfectly fine addition to the franchise (as well as being the only Id game to not have any DLC/Expansion to it), it's just sad that this was the final nail in the coffin for single-player Quake games. It has a pretty good atmosphere and the Strogg are made into an actually interesting force, but it overstays it's welcome by so much. Weapon mods are a feature, but they're almost nothing but ammo mods (with the exception of the homing mod for the rocket launcher and the tracking scope for the nail gun), while actually useful mods are nowhere to be found. Honestly, if you get it on sale, it's a fine game, I just wouldn't recommend going out of your way to play it.

Quake 4 is odd, if in the mostly banal sense. It is a game that must continue in the series staple of it being a technical marvel, this time displaying the same iD Tech 4 engine also used by Doom 3, Prey, and The Dark Mod. However, the employees at ID were more likely far busier with working on either Doom or Rage, leading to publisher Bethesda/ZeniMax to hand over development to Raven Software a developer known for having the unofficial carrier of B-tier 90's gun games before being consigned to the Call of Duty mill.
//..// outsourcing your half tech demo half arena shooter series to the unofficial b-tier developer of 90s shooters and they must create a gritty sci-fi war game because it's the 2000s. it must be a technical marvel of a demo for ID Tech 4 like Doom 3 but it can't be made by the same team because they're busy on Doom 3 but also it's gonna be an Xbox 360 launch title because it's 2005 so for all of the praise the engine's lighting (& more) gets (and for good reason!), it still has its limits one can see why the creator of the full scene path tracer for quake 2 (q2vkpt) chose it over 3 or 4 or even 1 though the really sharp shadows are still striking even now. like the game is neither terrible nor dull but this also has the similar complaints lobbed at Quake 2 AFAIK also the shotgun in this is also like Doom 3's but the sound effect is compressed and made a tiny bit louder the windows gamer box has all the screenshots but its offline rn.

first quake game not made by ID but raven software. its a more linear corridor based shooter with a real modern military feel. you're with AI for most of the game. i think the enviorments and general setting offput me the most. its just so drab and boring for most of the game, everything looks the same. some parts of levels are really cool intertwined with weird biological stuff so thats cool, but for the most part the environment and level design was a real let down. the guns feel pretty stock standard, yeah you have a bunch of them with their own uses, but the general gunplay mechanics are underwhelming for me.
enemy variation is ok, and the graphics engine still looks cool with good lighting, but ultimately the game just did not have enough variation in the levels and the general setting of the whole thing wasn't very interesting.

After a kind of dreadful first hour or so, it picks up and becomes a halfway decent shooter. Still the worst Quake campaign, but not a total trash fire.
The Xbox 360 port is one of the biggest technical messes I've played, I'm not one to dog on Frames per second but this was flat-out unplayable at many parts. Other than that when it worked it was okay, not remarkable but okay.
Pretty much a faster Doom 3. I still prefer Doom 3 though because the Hell levels are just the perfect interpretation of Hell I've seen in a game, and Quake 4 almost has this Halo element to it in terms of aesthetics, but with body horror. That body horror though is pretty nasty, especially with the lower-tech low poly models. The vehicle sections are pretty awful, but the core shooting can be fun with awesome sound design. I just wish one day, we get the dark fantasy version of Quake back in a future installment, rather the Strogg again.
