To me, this game is just so much more enjoyable than
Tetris it's not even funny. Actually, the entire series is so much more enjoyable than it, but that's beside the point. Not to say that Tetris is bad or anything, it's still decent in my opinion. But there's just a lot more to get out of this series that I'm surprised that it's not talked about and praised nearly as much. To me at least, it's such an obvious thing to do.
Well, OK, I can see why for one reason, and it's not the bullshit known as the gaming canon for once. I partially blame the lack of praise for this series on
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, a re-skinning of the first game, and how people were turned off of it for two reasons: The fact that it wasn't a "proper" Sonic game since it wasn't a platformer (a very weak reasoning in my opinion), and the fact that it's obviously more challenging due to the competitive aspect of the series. And I was admittedly one of those people for a long while, but after some time I was won over to the series in general. The competitive aspect makes this a hell of a lot more enjoyable than Tetris to me (which was even bettered in regards to being a non-competitive falling block puzzle game by
Lumines [ルミネス], but I digress) and gives it much more staying power. The games in this series are not something that I obsessively play, but the competition-focused aspect and trying to plan large chains ahead of time is just much more compelling to me, personally.
The other reason I love this so much is the charm of it. The series has a large cast of characters, and while they're obviously not #3deep5everyone, the encounters before them are certainly enjoyable. They're short, but they're genuinely funny at times in my opinion. The soundtrack isn't incredible or anything, but it works and certainly fits the silly mood without being obnoxious.
Honestly, I just love Puyo Puyo and this is the best of the series in my opinion. Granted, I haven't played all of them yet, so maybe this count be dethroned later on in my life, but for now I'm sticking by that opinion.
