it's not bad by any means, but it is completely outclassed by Red and Blue version in every way. Definitely worth a try if you are a huge pokemon fan, if not, I would stick with Red and Blue or some of the games that came after.

Pokemon Yellow is pretty much the special version of Pokemon Blue/Red. You start off with Pikachu but you are given the possibility to get the other 3 starters. As a counter balance, now there are a couple of pokemon that would be found on the wild that cant be captured on this game. There are some minor sprites and level design changes, and on the whole the story follow more closely the story of the anime. The major example of this is the pikachu that follows you around, that cant be evolved or released.
All in all i do feel that its so similar that its essencially the same premise. I do feel that they way they implement the other starters into the story messes up a bit with the pacing, but other than that i feel its about on the same level as Red/blue.

Why would you give me the worst possible starter in the entire franchise
Pikachu is fucking awful and the game is just red and blue which is literal gen 1 garbage. Don't @ me gen wunners.

this might be the only third/expanded version I don't feel is an actual straight upgrade over the original. Yeah it's got QoL changes to a couple of movesets, all starters and better battle sprites but that's really it, you don't exactly lose out on much by playing R/B as opposed to something like D/P vs. Plat where the latter fixes so many things for the better and highlights Sinnoh's strengths.
I remember being like, 8 and having the guide for this but not the game. My friend had the game but he could never get past brock because even his level 17 pikachu couldn't beat an onix (for obvious reasons). Shout out to that guidebook - Brock is really only beatable by getting a butterfree because it learns confusion on evolution.
Yellow is worse than Red/Blue in every regard, except for the E4 movesets and the fact that you can acquire all 3 starters in one run. The Gym Leader's teams are really dumbed down (Surge, Sabrina, Koga especially), there's less variety in the Wild Pokemon you can encounter (Cinnabar Mansion is the worst victim of this) I recently forced myself to do a run where I had to use Pikachu in every big battle first until it fainted and it proves what a stupid idea it was to make a version based on just Pikachu. The only way you can beat strong trainers is with Double Team/Toxic shenanigans.
