Like it's predecessor on the SNES, Pilotwings 64 remains an interesting concept and hardware showcase. To this day it exhibits many of the console's capabilities, though the frame rate does suffer for it much of the time.
It's marketed as a "flight simulator" but is a little crude in that respect; the various vehicles handle relatively realistically and are difficult to master, but as a game, Pilotwings 64 is more a sort of collection of minigames or skill tester, lending itself to repeated attempts in pursuit of higher scores. There's not a lot more to it, and the game is certainly harmed by its barebones presentation and complete lack of story and dialogue.
Flawed, yet often fun, charming and addictively challenging.
