A student placed under probation in Tokyo in suspicion of assault discovers the ability to steal people's twisted desires with the help of his Persona in the Metaverse, a manifestation of people's collective minds.
There was an error saving your submission.
A high school student who transfers to a new school after being falsely accused of assault and put on probation awakens to the special power of the Persona, forming a group of secret vigilantes known as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts with his new friends. Over the course of a school year, they explore the Metaverse, a supernatural realm born from humanity's subconscious desires, to steal malevolent intent from the hearts of adults.
A case study in style over substance, not helped by a grating localization. Doesn't know what to do with its themes of oppression or societal pressure, and is muddled as a result.

in the department of aesthetics, this game is one of the best made ALL-TIME.
however, the rest of the game does not reach that level of quality.
i'm against the thought that this game is a beautiful stylization devoid of any content. but i definitely see where that comes from.
the story that is sold as really "mature and serious" is... not really that. it's kinda dumb, to be honest. it fits the "teenagers playing god" trope we've already seen in other works, but for a game that leads into talking about societal opression and governmental corruption only to then put the feet in the water and sit by the pool's margin.
the characters are, pretty honestly, bland and sometimes obnoxious. this cast is by far the least interesting from all the modern persona games although it's the cast that also has the best development.
one good thing i can say about this game is the social links, now named confidants, that are pretty good, the best in the series on my vision.
the gameplay is fine, the music is fine, the voice acting is fine...
i honestly think i'm too satured of this game due to atlus milking the cow. probably the review i'm making when i'm revisiting this game after a few years is gonna be less harsh.

Without a doubt one of my all time favorite playthroughs, sure it has flaws with a very slow start, melodramatic arcs and a few voice lines that get way too annoying throughout, even so persona 5 is a masterpiece and a game that has defined what a RPG is and should strive to be like quality wise. (8.5/10)

Persona 5 is a fantastic game that combines life simulation and visual novel with JRPG combat mechanics. I actually think that the game is a life sim first and RPG second, but its really the way that they two interact that make the game as enticing as it is.
You play as a high schooler forced to move schools since he was wrongly accused of a crime. In this new setting you learn to make new friends or bounds, and discover an alternate dimension that allows you to change individuals hearts (or minds really). Its an interesting setting that allows to explore a lot of themes, including justice, morality and crime. Even more so, the game is really well written and its easy to roped along in finding more about its colourful cast of characters.
The RPG side of things and combat is also great. There is a lot of depth to discover, which needs to be used on higher difficulties, but on normal the game is an easy ride for the most part. Its monster collecting elements are addictive, as well as fusing personas. The turn based combat is very snappy, quick to get to the point and with satisfying animations.
Visually and sonically the game as a very upbeat and eye catching style. Just moving through the menus is a delight for the eyes, and its stylish cartoon look is basically ageless.
This game basically excells in all of its components, with perhaps just being a bit exhausting due to its lenghty run time (the royal edition makes this worst, even if the new content is excellent). But more than its individual parts, its really how the stylish visuals combine effortlessly with a very memorable cast of characters, how the tight combat doesnt get in the way of the plot, and how the huge amount of side content never feels too much because there is enough time in one playthrough to explore everything at your own pace.

I will always thank this game for introducing me to the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. At the time thought this was a masterpiece. But leaves a surprisingly bad taste. Having played other SMT games, I gotta say this is easily one of the weakest entries. And wastes a lot of potential.
I bought Royal for the switch some time ago. But I cannot get myself to play it. Thinking back to the game, there definitely are some amazing moments and elements. But there is so much annoying, arbitrary and useless things I doubt ill ever replay this. Its immensely easy, especially for SMT standards (all persona games are very easy tho). The story paces like a salted snail. Bad character development, annoying characters and just a bad hero's journey.
The style tho is amazing, nothing new there. The game will always be a treat to look at. Though I think the OST is highly overrated, its still great and fits the game perfectly.
The reason I think this game is rated so highly is because its most peoples first SMT game (I mean, mine too), and SMT games are just amazing in general. But I also feel like its their only SMT game. The more SMT games you play, the more you'll see how quite uninteresting and uninspired Persona 5 is. Definitely not a rant about the score, everybody has their opinion, but I wish people knew how much other amazing games the SMT franchise has to offer, as it is criminally underrated and overlooked (besides Persona 5).
Good and especially fun, but too much annoyances and missed opportunities to be part of a conversation about best games of all time, where it is surprisingly often mentioned.
TLDR: Play more SMT games people, they are amazing.

Well, in that case... "DOGSHIT DRUMMER" meanwhile Metallica is one of the most beloved bands in the history of Heavy Metal, how could this be? Probably just some a bunch of rando music nerds.
when comparing this to p3 and p4 i feel like the gameplay improvements are almost understated. the switch from randomly generated hallways to bespoke dungeons is a complete game changer
I disagree that P3 is the best one to start with. Maybe Reload changes that (I'm yet to play it) but there's something majorly wrong/clunky with all the previous existing versions of P3 - awful partner AI, shoddy graphics and missing cutscenes on P3P and its ports, etc. P4 is for sure the best one to start with depending on your sensibilities. If you're already used to batty RPGs then any of them should be fine tho.
The time period that i played it was very special (though i feel sad when i think about it by my own fault), still a very special game, persona 5 is still great (love the ost too).
@Crimson7 thats a fantastic game with terrific and beautiful writing. i appreciate the recommendation, but as a comparison its doing something vastly different and i dont think it rebuts that most of persona 5s writing is deeply engaging and honestly really solid in what it sets out to achieve
p5 is engaging when it's not full of exposition, filler and characters saying the same thing over and over again like it's an anime that treats its audience like adhd ridden children (half of the game)
