Title
To summarize the plot: "be your true self! But only if your true self isn't gay, isn't trans, isn't too much of a tomboy, doesn't dress weird, inherits the family business, and generally abides by cultural norms. You can like sewing, but your friend will still call you a slur."

The gameplay is good turn-based JRPG stuff, while the social simulation is generally homophobic and bad. We love our deadbeat dads! As an added note, the original version is far superior to Golden, not that it was great to begin with.

Title
While traditional Turn Based JRPGs fell out of flavor shortly after the turn of the 2000s, Altus is really an RPG company that stuck with them and continued to make critically acclaimed games in this genre. Persona is actually not that far from something like Dragon Quest when it comes to battles, you have HP and MP (well called SP here) with each character having his own spells with strength and weaknesses. I'm a big fan of this type of game, it feels a little bit of comfort food since this is mostly what I've played in the 90s. The only thing with Atlus games is that they are locked into old platforms, and they have finally started to port their classics to old systems.

Persona is a big franchise now, but upon release Persona 4 didn't sell that well. Released in late 2008 in North America for the PlayStation 2, people had upgraded to the next gen of consoles at that point and it really made a bigger splash when it was released in its definitive Golden edition for the Vita, and instantly became a best-seller for that system. Of course this brings us to the massive success of Persona 5, the most successful game of all-time for Atlus. A lot of people wanted to try out the older titles, but unfortunately weren't easily available until we finally got a Steam port and its incredible sales for a 12 year old game really shows the interested that people have for games like this. I have not played the PS2 or PSVita but for me this was a great port and I never ran into no issues. The controls took a minute to get used to, but once you get those locked it becomes quite easy to play and sink in so many hours.

I ended up with 91 hours on my playthrough. If you want to jump into Persona 4, you should prepare for a large time investment but it's really worth it. The biggest strength of the game is the story, you get to spend a full year with the cast of characters and you'll get to love them all as quirky as they are. Each day you'll have to decide who you want to spend time with, and over 20 of these social links have their unique storylines that you get to choose where to advance. I felt like Persona 4 was a little bit like watching a TV series of multiple seasons, when you get to the end you feel a little empty and will miss spending time with these people. The English voice acting is excellent, each one brings a lot of personality and they aren't any generic characters in the cast. Doing the social is a lot of fun, although around the end of the game it becomes a little redundant, it's still a pretty great system that is quite well executed here.

Perhaps the little lackluster point is the dungeons themselves, once you've done the first one they sort of all follow the same concept with the same designs of enemy locations, floors, and chest placements. The dungeons feel more like a test of endurance, how long can your party last by climbing with the tough enemies to defeat after one or the other. When you leave the dungeon to heal, you will make a day pass and you need to complete them after a certain time limit. The battle system is pretty good. It feels very classic and traditional, but there's nice touches like knocking enemies down and your party making a special group attack if everyone is knocked down. Even the bosses are another test of endurance, you have to grind them out slowly and uses your abilities correctly to survive. Unfortunately there were a few instances where I had to grind out a few levels because the bosses got too strong, but that's probably my fault for me going a little too fast in the dungeons.

Overall Persona 4 is a really complete and unique game. It definitely stands as one of the best RPGs of its era, especially at a time where the genre was moving a lot towards open world and action battles. It's got great art and a great story, challenging gameplay and it did not feel dated at all for something that originally came out in 2008. I would highly recommend it to RPG fans, it's great value for the price and the amount of hours that you will poor into it. Now is just hoping that Atlus will bring more of their great games to Steam.

this game is basically the opposite of persona 3.

while the latter had bad character beats and a killing storyline, with a very serious and depressing tone

this game has amazing characters moments, but an absolute pasta-with-sausage story and a totally upbeat tone.

there's a lot of other differences, but most of them are minor and/or left to preference.

but to me, there's one big difference that wins persona 4 over persona 3 for me:

the setting.

inaba is an AMAZING world set for a persona series and quite frankly is the greatest until this day. it's foggy atmosphere put together with it heartwarming small city vibe makes it such a good experience to be in that you kinda forget you have to solve a murder (imagine putting teenagers to solve a case of serial murders. damn)

outside of that, the games are pretty much brothers that end up liking very different things to differentiate themselves from each other.

I always enjoyed the Persona games more as a sort of easygoing comfort food than anything else, and this one is no different. There's a cozy charm to the small town trappings, an irresistible levity and warmth to the character interactions. Though lacking in nuance, the game's presentation and charm save it from becoming what would otherwise be a somewhat dull dungeon crawler.

This, like the other games in the series, is a sort of VN/RPG/dungeon crawler hybrid with life sim elements. And I would say about 70% of the game's weight is shifted onto the VN half, which, as a VN, it's fine. The story is fine, but may leave older players expecting more complexity feeling let down. I'm officially too old to fully empathize with the pubescent main cast (and I certainly cringe when the game suggests I romance one of them), but their antics keep me entertained enough.

The combat is turn based and mostly about exploiting weaknesses and smart usage of stat buffs, ala something like Pokémon. It's about as difficult to figure out as Pokémon, save for the somewhat frustrating fusion mechanics. However the gameplay quickly becomes repetitive, compounded by the (please don't kill me for this) frankly annoying soundtrack.

Title
A Great Game with Weird Pacing
This is my third Persona game. I began with 5, then played P3P when that dropped on gamepass. Finally got around to playing this one.

Overall, I enjoyed it. The central mystery stayed engaging throughout, though I feel like the way it wrapped up was a bit cheap. That is to say, I don't think there were many clues throughout the game to make the mystery's grand reveal rewarding. I never felt like a detective, or that I figured something out that other characters failed to see; it's all laid out for you.

The gameplay loop is still fun, though I found myself binging the dungeons and then spending the next two-to-three weeks or whatever just maxing social links. There isn't a problem with this necessarily, but the balance between dungeon-crawling and social simulation reached extremes in both directions and I never felt the balance that 3 and 5 had. (I feel like 3 handles this issue well with the "Sickness" mechanic).

I played on normal because I'm generally bad at JRPGs, and the difficulty started off hard but gradually got easier; the final dungeons were a breeze. I feel like, while it was easier than expected, I did get rewarded for the occasional grinding session, so I'm not sure what to think overall about the difficulty.

Now, as for the characters, I have mixed feelings. Some were really well written at first and got boring (Yosuke, Chie, Yukiko), while others were problematic at first and then got more interesting, but the character development never went full circle. The homophobia and trans-phobia is striking and obvious and has not aged well, though I know some (I found at least one academic article on the topic) have argued that while it isn't great representation, it's a step forward for representation in Japanese culture. But I don't know. I'm not Japanese.

The relationships with the Player character were ultimately un-engaging, though I think that has to do with the fact that your player character is pretty soulless, either saying TERRIBLE things to people or overly-polite/nice things. Why every female had the hots for my weird player character I may never know, the male fantasy is strong with this series and it's on display here more than any other Persona I've played.

To conclude, it's a fun game, and if you're like me and only sort of like JRPGs its a good time. However, the story and characters did not rope me in the way so many said they would. The most fun part ended up being those good ol' Personas leveling up and fusing into newer ones. Perhaps this means I should just play SMT, leaving the social sim stuff behind, but I find those games cold and dark in a way that is unappealing. I love, for better or worse, the heart of the Persona games, and their relentless dedication to wholesome stories about friendship (even if some of those stories have not aged well).

I think one of the reasons why P4 resonates with me more than P3 and P5 is Inaba is probably the best setting in any Persona game. Tatsumi Port Island has great lore with the Kurijo group stuff, and Tokyo is an iconic city lovingly recreated in P5, but Inaba is as much a character as anyone else in P4. Maybe it's because I grew up in a small town, but all of the thematic elements and narrative points about small town politics, modernization, and small town gossip do a lot to characterize Inaba in a way the other cities aren't.

that's literally what people from my hometown did, and the impact Wal-Mart had on the small businesses in town among other things is the same impact Junes had on Inaba. It's an accurate depiction of rural life, or at least the similarities between Japanese and American rural life.
