You play as the life of a person in 5 minutes. You look for gold, get a wife or not, and eventually die.
Its pretentious walking sim that doesnt really convey any sort of message except boredom.

Passage is a particularly laughable example of what happens when a game designer tries to make an artistic statement for the sake of making one. I remember reviews upon its release claiming that Passage showed the eventuality of death and lack of control we have in life. The game was praised for its deep message by would-be intellectuals across the internet. Seems times have changed, as you never hear about this game anymore. At the end of the day, Passage is effectively a game where you walk right for a while, there's some moderately engaging atmosphere, you finish the experience in about five minutes, and you never think about it again. Sure, the concepts are there and observable, but there is really no meat to it. A painting or short film could get the same point across with about the same level of depth. The idea that a game like this is more artistically relevant than a quality mainstream title released in the same year (how about Portal, for example) is completely ridiculous. Passage is basically a Youtube video that barely qualifies as an interactive experience, and is the poster child for dull, pretentious flavor of the month indie games.

I don't consider this game great, but I do not understand why this free five minute game seems to elicit such a negative response from so many people, I might understand it more if Jason Rohrer seemed really pretentious, but unless there's something I'm missing, that doesn't seem to be the case.
Alright, you have a point. Maybe it's the press' fault for hyping a 5-minute walking simulator, but the fact that Passage of all things is heralded as the gold standard for art games is outrageous, especially when there are much, much, MUCH better games that elevated the medium before.
In the age of the internet, almost every week something is proclaimed to be the greatest most important work of art ever created, and it's pretty much always embarrassing to read about. I'm sure there's stuff you're very fond of that's been showered with embarrassing praise (for me the first 3 metal gear solid games fit that description), I just try to ignore that stuff. Also sorry if it seemed like addressing you with my comment, I was actually just making a general statement.

I've played a moderate number of "art games" and while occasionally I'll find one that's pretty engaging, most of them are uninteresting to me beyond their surface-level aesthetics. But I can't deny that I've played some that are so on the nose they make my eyes roll and this is one them.
