Taking a page from other RPGs, Nintendo removed the HP/FP/BP limits in this chapter of Paper Mario, adding much more flexibility (and fun) to character customization, finally allowing players to draw Mario in their own image. The dialogue and story is even funnier than before, and almost had me rolling all over the floor. Note also that the combat mechanics have also been expanded: beating enemies to a pulp has never been more fun. Part of this is the heavier weight given to the "paper" theme itself in this chapter, planting a more complete and distinct identity for the series than before. The game world itself is a lot more interesting too, even if the different areas seem too cut apart from each other, and only bound to each other by warp pipes. Overall, The Thousand-Year Door stacks up well to its predecessor, but it is so much more than a recycling or copy-and-pasting of old ideas, as sequels so often are.

the remake/remaster looks slightly off lighting-wise but it seems like 99% of the soul is intact. Very happy to see the Mario Mandate is dead for now at least.
If you noticed they actually added new animations and sprites for all the major characters included partners that didn't have them; the intention seems to have been to meld the OG art style with the papery stuff they've been infatuated with for the last decade. Bowser even has a back sprite now when he didn't before.
The original game is probably THE GameCube game that aged the best visually so it's commendable to even try. Would be curious if any new content is adding since it's a full remake and not just a spitshine remaster.
I'm really happy that this is getting remade, but does anyone else feel they're leaving this one to die? 2024 Switch game, that's also a remake, with a new console (backward-compatible according to leaks, but still) on the horizon. Just seems like they want to prove that the post-Sticker Star direction is better in case this game sells worse than TOK
Knowing TTYD stans, however, I can see them buying several copies just for the sake of inflating sales, so
to the reviewer who said rogueport doesn't connect to anything so it doesn't feel real, it's a port town.. and the town doesn't exactly have enough citizens that would believe in a strong local government enough to build infastructure. Now, the sewers can be used for smuggling, no law abiding citizen would want to go to the sewers.

I don't think it's possible for any 1st party Nintendo game to be "left out to die" with an install base of 130+ million consoles out there...
