Owlboy is one of those games thats a really magical experience. There is so much charm in the game, the pixel art is fantastic. The level design is great, and its constantly challenging the player with new ideas and mechanics. I didnt find it too hard at all. Suberb pacing
The checkpoint system could use a bit of reworking, particularly in the last few levels. The jumping animation could also be abit better.
Really enjoyed it. Its one of those games that is better than the sum of its parts just because of the amount of love that went into the game. Im so glad it finally got released.

OK, it's hard in this kind of situation to not almost subconsciously have some kind of backlash against the insanely positive reviews this game gets. But I think it's fine - it's fun. But I honestly can't say it approaches being a masterpiece.
First, let's talk about what's probably the most noticeable aspect of this game - the graphics. Yes, they are beautiful - and the animations are beautiful. But even here, I have some niggle with them... it's hard for to place exactly what it is. I think it's that the assets are beautiful, but the way they are put together to make levels feels boring and not really visually engaging. There's also that, at least in my opinion, although the game looks amazing in terms of fidelity, I feel like it looks kind of samey in terms of assets.

I actually loved where the story ended up, even if it gets pretty far fetched at the end. Absolutely one of my favorite games, playing it for the first time knowing nothing about it was a magical experience. Though i can understand why people have problems with the story (even thpugh i loved it), i don't really understand the gameplay criticisms. I thought it was a wonderful blend of zelda like with side-scrolling shoot em up styles
"Is it metroidvania? Not really as it is very linear and many environments look similar, making some backtracking a chore. Is it a twin stick shooter? Again, not a great one as the majority of the game takes place in cramped cave environments. Does it have any depth to its gameplay? Not really beyond recruiting new characters and collecting coins to buy optional upgrades and cosmetic items."
If this game wanted to be a better twin-stick shooter, it needed bigger environments to take advantage of it. And the last dungeon was practically 40 minutes of copy/paste repetitive platform jumping that felt unbelievably rushed (I assume the devs just wanted to be done with the game by that point after 9 years).
Despite this, I did really enjoy the story and lore and had an overall okay time, but I'd only recommend this game on sale.
Hard disagree there, but i also was looking at it from the perspective of a story driven zelda clone with a bigger emphasis on story, and not so much as a non linear metroidvania or a twin stick shooter.
Honestly the more i think about it this is everything i look for in video games. Beautiful world that gets more interesting as you go further, paper mario styled partner system, zelda like dungeons, beautiful soundtrack and amazing characterization
