An unusual satellite photo taken by the Hearthian space program leads you down a path to uncover some of the most well-kept secrets of the Outer Wilds.
Death is not an end. An exercise of extreme empathy through peril and terror. An urge, a need, to understand. We have to try to understand, we cannot be afraid of it for our whole lives. Because our lives are not alone. How we live will affect the way hundreds more will live, and so on. Our life will tell the stories that we leave behind, and those stories will shape life in ways that we will never be able to comprehend. It's amazing, just how small we are. It's endless curiosity, love of life, it's realizing that you as one are just as important as every one. Every one before you, every one after you. We are all so, so fucking amazing, and while it may take us too long to realize, and while we might be too afraid of understanding to notice, the way that we shine is bright, blinding, sheer and pure light, beaming and swallowing us all. An essential narrative to the original.

Echoes of the Eye is one of the best expansions ever made and, in my opinion, exceeds the already very high bar set by the base game. I'm not going to mention any specifics, because the thing with Outer Wilds is, you can't say anything. Not even the tiniest, most minute detail. And that makes it a lot more special to experience.

Echoes of the Eye is a very pleasing and well structured DLC for the base game, in a way that it's a complete new story, with different mechanics and atmosphere, but it also greatly complements the original plot. All the core gameplay elements are still there, it's pure exploration surrounding a mystery and you have to figure everything out through little puzzles and artifacts.
The main twist of this DLC is a surreal, horror, nightmare-like approach, with a lot more eerie, creepy and unsettling scenarios, which fits really well with Outer Wilds, since it's a frightening game for a good portion of the playerbase. The new explorable world is definitely my favourite out of all of the ones in the game - it's beautiful, mysterious and mystical. The soundtrack and sound effects are top-notch, they set the atmosphere so perfectly it hurts.
The plot of EotE is as good as you can expect if you played the main game, it's not complex at all, but it's intriguing enough for you to search desperately for answers. It's another perspective over the whole "Eye" cult developed by the Nomai, by a totally different race, with different beliefs, technologies, fears and aspirations. The ending is specially touching.
To be really honest, I liked this DLC a little more than the original game, mainly because: it is shorter, which allows you to play it thoroughly in one sit; there are different game mechanics all over the place, and all of them are fun; I really liked the horror-oriented parts. I mean, I'd not recommend playing just the DLC, the main game is quintessential, but I enjoyed the experience of playing Echoes of the Eye a little more.

As time have passed I'm now sure this is the best DLC ever. Completely fine as a small stand-alone game like P.T. but also perfectly integrated into the base game as a DLC. It's been 6 months since I completed this game and I still can't stop thinking about it. Sometimes I forget the boat traversing part and the pitch-black night owl thing are on the same planet haha.
honestly the stealth bits at the very end of this one feel poorly executed to me. while I don't mind a jumpscare, the failstates they introduce are an unwelcome addition to the cyclic gameplay. shame cause the rest is excellent as ever.
People always say this is scary and beyond the mild jump scares from pursuers, I cannot tell why they would ever call this scary. Also, this has a great ending. Definitely worth the effort.

Okay technically there's a second one but 1) it's pretty easy, and 2) I somehow discovered the secret to circumventing it before the game told me lol
Also, this has a great ending. Definitely worth the effort.
