Although the screen size is smaller and the palette obvious more limited, Operation C is a really well done Contra continuation for the Game Boy. It's got all of the power ups returning, and you can still mix and match them like you used to be able to as well. The stages are just the right size and the bosses are more than fair (although you're at a real disadvantage fighting them without a powerup).
It's also hard as fuck too, which can make the game hard to get into. But hey, the Konami code works on this one too. If you like Contra, definitely check it out.

Maybe it's the fact that Contra's gameplay is really simple to begin with, but it's honestly kinda shocking how well it translated to the Game Boy. It doesn't quite measure up to the NES entries, but I honestly don't know if it ever could have given the hardware. They probably pulled it off as well as possible, and falling just shy of two great games is still a pretty high achievement.
