One of the best cinematic platformers of the '90s held back by some frustrating design decisions and a poor finale. The cheap deaths and input lag on movement is frustrating to no end. I kind of love it but at the same time its flaws left a bad taste in my mouth.

It totally does, actually. Lots of people play cinematic platformers specifically because they control uniquely compared to other platformers. It's literally part of what defines the genre.
There's always cues for obstacles and danger though, visually and aurally. There's stories of blind people playing this game because of the excellent sound design. So I don't think it's really that trial-and-error based. And I always found the controls appropriate, they feel like you're actually controlling the character, who is pretty clumsy.
Also... the fact that it's all extremely trial/error for split second decisions? That's a huge problem.
