Despite the destruction of RuptureFarms, Abe's people continue to be exploited by the Glukkons. The greedy industrialists are plundering ancient Mudokon burial grounds for bones to produce the highly addictive Soulstorm Brew. With increasing numbers of Mudokons falling to the drink's mind-altering influence, Abe must find the source of its production so he can put an end to it.

Title
While I love the first Oddworld game, I'll admit that it's a bit too rough around the edges to be considered a classic as it has flaws that this game thankfully does away with, making it the best in the entire franchise.

The biggest improvement here is the ability to quick save whenever you wish, this fixes the biggest issue with the original as the lack of checkpoints meant you often had to repeat large sections of the campaign should you make the slightest error. The trade-off of course is that the puzzles are much more meticulous as we have the return of all of the creatures from the first game plus some new enemies to add that much more tension to the game. You'd think that this being an expansion pack of Abe's odyssey would mean it doesn't have anything to offer outside of correcting what the main game did wrong, it turns out that's not the case as this game is twice as long as the original despite being developed within a year after its release. As such, you have to forgive the reused assets here even though there aren't as many of them as you would think. Another improvement here is the simplified command system, namely that Abe can interact with multiple Mudokons rather than just one at a time. They also have different moods which need to be overcome in order to order them around, these include anger, depression and hysteria and lead to dire consequences if the wrong approach to these moods is applied. The story is pretty basic, it's more or less the same ark that Abe goes through in the first game only now the world is aware of his exploits rather than him being an underdog like before. This leads to even wittier dialogue and slapstick which the series has yet to recapture in future titles to my disappointment. There's so much more I can talk about here, but I think you understand how amazing this game is by this point.

It’s a fantastic follow-up to a great but flawed game, one that the developers have yet to top even after all these years.

Title
"Abe's Exoddus" was for "Abe's Oddysee" a kind of expansion pack, an addition to the Oddworld series of games, but not a wholly new chapter in the Oddworld story (unlike the next one, "Munch's Oddysee"). According to Lorne Lanning, it was developed in just nine months, which is frankly amazing in retrospect.

If it wasn't for the ludicrous difficulty (further amplified by the infamous lack of quick save), "Abe's Oddysee" would have been a tad too short. "Abe's Exoddus" is considerably longer (you have a lot more Mudokons to save) and, at times, it can still be challenging, but hardly frustrating. Ok, the Glukkon-controlling parts remain pretty darn frustrating even so.

On the other hand, there is a slight loss of atmosphere, as there are slightly fewer impressive backgrounds (in spite of the slightly improved animations) and, aside the Necrum or Slig Barracks sequences, the industrial landscapes are fairly monotonous, distinguished especially by colors and textures. It's only something like the gruesome revelation of the "Tear X-Tractor" towards the end which makes me fill with shock and awe as much as I was in the first game. Yes, I know, that means I got used to fairly easily to the fearsome sight of Slogs, Greeters or.. hmmm, no, Fleeches are still pretty scary everytime.

Otherwise, the routine tends to install. There's quite some grinding involved, especially if you want to save all the Mudokons, but at least the gameplay is varied enough to keep you focused. The variety of the Mudokons and of the GameSpeak improves things a lot. It's a pity that the old 2D form will be so quickly abandoned in favor of a more spectacular 3D engine...

Going though these games (again) earlier this year confirmed to me that emulation is the best way to play them. (Fuck New N Tasty.) The emulated PS4 re-release is admittedly buggy as fuck, but being able to use saved states to instantly reload when you fuck up makes the game so much less painful. And unlike Oddysee, you can't even really call it cheesing in Exoddus, as it's essentially just recreating the in-game Quiksave mechanic but with faster loading times. I made an exception for the Enders though and did those single-segment, since it seemed more in the intended spirit

Surprised to see this higher than the first game, thought it was divisive, maybe I’m thinking of another entry
