Gegege no Kitarou is one of those early NES games that had to get its graphics updated for an American release(and christened "Ninja Kid"), that by itself isn't really based on a quirky license on the likes of Kinnikuman or Q-Tarou, but it's an old 60s manga about ghosts and the occult(I haven't read it but it looks very cool). That already drives a lot of engagement to be found in game form. The objective is simple, you go from stages to stages and need to defeat a certain number of enemies, or collect a certain number of items. It's very basic as was the norm for early NES games, but the level of fairness it offers and the straightforwardness of its goal is refreshing. At the very least Kitaro with his lovely 60s bangs looks way cooler than the babyface ninja kid we've got in the American release.
The Japanese ROM has a translation patch, so head on and find it.
