Let's revisit this in a year, or even a few months. This game was clearly not ready to go out when it did, nor did it get the budget it deserves, but the devs are being very proactive in improving the game in pretty big ways. (Not even a month out the door and they've already added dash dancing, which changes the game pretty drastically.) As it stands it's pretty fun, and there's a lot of good potential. There's a bunch of crazy mechanics here, and to play this effectively at a high level, you need to be fast - even moreso than Melee, although that game requires much more precision than this. The airdash in this game adds a lot of depth, and a lot of other strange but unique mechanics like teetering and the RPS strong attacks change both neutral a lot. There's still a lot of balancing issues, though, and characters are prone to kill each other off of one hit in rather uninteresting ways - so many dair trains and ladder combos! But those are things they'll figure out as they go, I'm sure.
What I'm more concerned about is the complete lack of casual content here. It seems like there was an assumption - from Ludosity or Nickelodeon, I'm not sure - that simply having all these Nickelodeon characters would be enough, but as cool as Aang vs. Reptar is... There needs to be more to appeal to the average joe. This game is way too janky to be as appealing as Smash Ultimate, and anyone hopping online to play matches without any real interest in learning advanced mechanics is going to get their ass kicked without getting so much as a hit in. (Especially since the rollback netcode, promising as it is, is still pretty stuttery and characters can teleport around a lot. It's especially bad on the Switch version, too.) The single player arcade mode is really bad, and when you can see the lack of budget in the visuals and audio, it's hard to feel like the game is a collision of worlds in the same way that Smash is. (It's wild that there are no voice clips at all. The mods I've seen have been kind of annoying, but surely there's a way to do it that makes the game better.) The game looks, sounds, and feels better than the initial promos suggested, but it's still really rough around the edges.
As it stands, I think the game has legs, but right now those legs are based heavily on what the game can be instead of what it actually is. Every fighting game is a WIP, not just through patches but through the meta as well. But this one is more than most.

nasb2, from that 7 minute gameplay trailer, already showed me how much of a fuck-up this game was and also how much the devs learned from their mistakes. very excited for the sequel
