on my best playthrough of this i got excalibur on my first try ever dipping my sword into a fountain, made it all the way to minetown and sokoban, had several potions of healing and teleports and was like level 9 or 10, and i accidentally choked on a lembas wafer. a god damn lembas wafer.

Such is life: a mixture of fortunate and unfortunate circumstances.
on my (now) best playthrough of this I got turned to stone by medusa because I had nothing over my eyes. it made me upset, but I never got too angry about it. of course, that's what she does.
One day.. one day I will ascend. Over countless hours just reading about the game and looking for tips and tricks, I've come across plenty of stories from players who put a decade or more into the game before they finally ascended, or simply decided they would no longer waste precious hours of their short, miserable lives on this monstrosity. But me? I *will* ascend, if it's the last thing I do. Lately I play at home every night on my local install and at work every morning on alt.org. Always Valkyrie, of course. The furthest I've gotten is Medusa's Island 2 or 3 times; I have yet to get past xp level 13 to be able to actually start my quest, but I'm getting close. The frustration I get from dying over and over in this is unlike what most difficult games make me feel. I don't want to punch walls or scream; it's a quiet, almost existential despair that washes over me like an intoxicant. But somehow that motivates me to try again, every time. Lol what an incredible game. God damn.
A couple days after I said this I made it through the valk quest, Medusa, the castle, and into gehennom, and back out and in a few times. A few floors down, I got swallowed by Juiblex, couldn't fight my way out. Prayed, forgot your god can't hear you in Gehennom (what a dark little twist) and it got heard by Moloch instead, so he tried to smite me with a lightning bolt, but it just made Juiblex explode instead, freeing me! But Moloch was mad I survived the lightning, so he tried to disintegrate me. My silver dragon scale mail saved me from that, but my cloak of magic resistance got destroyed by it, which left me vulnerable to spells. Some wizard immediately started hitting me with shit, making me confused, stunned, and vulnerable, and that allowed a little fucking elf to run up and shiv me with a dagger over and over until I, unable to fight back, died. Emergent gameplay at its finest
