NES Open Tournament Golf is an NES game featuring Mario characters. As the name of the game implies, it is a golf game and was one of the first golfing games in the Mario series. You can play a round of golf on one of three different courses. One or two players can play in the U.S., Japan, or the U.K. and choose a stroke or match play game.
So there are good sports games on the NES after all. This is probably one of the most complete games on there, it has basically everything you could ask for in a golf game. It has multiple modes to try out, 3 different sets of golf courses, a practice mode to practice your hits, the ability to hit the golf ball at a predetermined angle, different surfaces, a lot of options for clubs including the ability to customize them, and more. Playing this makes me forget how much I don't care for golf in real life. I guess the biggest gripe I have for this is that it's kind of boring to look at? There's nothing wrong aesthetically, it just feels like the most expected graphics when you think "NES golf game". In any case, if you feel like playing a golf game that does its job and is replayable then this is the game for you. Playing this was a pleasant surprise.
