After getting his BMW M3 GTR sabotaged by a street racer named Clarence "Razor" Callahan, the player loses a race against Razor, has to hand over his car to him in the process and gets arrested on the scene due to illegal street racing, while Razor escapes from the cops and afterwards uses his new car to become the #1 racer in the city of Rockport. Upon being released from prison, the player now has to defeat all of Rockport's main racers one by one in order to earn reputation and be able to face Razor once again.

One of my childhood favourites
Ok, so I obviously have an enormous bias when it comes to this game.
I basically grew up on this and Pokemon games as a kid and I loved Need for Speed games in particular due to things explained later in the review.

Title
My 25 Favorite Games I Played Before Turning 25, #10
Out of all of the successful racing game series, none of them come close to how bizarre and polarizing the Need for Speed series has become. This is a series that is constantly trying to create its own niche, resulting in many 'love it or hate it' type racing games that generally only share a few concepts with each other. They all use real licensed cars, and they all try to strike a balance between realistic driving with arcade racing mechanics. Ever since Need for Speed III, most of these games try to work in a 'police chase' element of gameplay as well. This is what Most Wanted has perfected, though there's more to this game than wrecking police cars.

Need for Speed Underground was the first NFS game (and one of the first popular racing games in general) to include an in-depth modification system for the cars, letting the player turn innocent vehicles into Fast and Furious monsters. This makes for an interesting combo with the game's variety of cars, including VWs, Mercedes, and Lamborghinis. Most Wanted has all the standard customization, including custom paint, decals, wings, body kits, as well as some goofy extra parts like roof scoops. This creativity is showcased with the cars of your rivals, also known as the Blacklist. Each of the 15 blacklist members have their own wild visual design. Even better, the player can add these blacklist cars to their own garage if they get lucky enough to obtain the opponent's pink slip after beating them.

Every race in this game takes place on the same open world map, giving this a 'Midtown Madness' city circuit vibe. Often the police will get involved with these races, but your main enemy is going to be either the time limits or the opponent's rubberband AI. Especially during the races against Blacklist members, you won't be staying too far ahead of them. And while police chases have been a Need for Speed staple since the third game in the series, it took until Most Wanted for the cop chases to become an entertaining element of its gameplay instead of an annoyance. Most Wanted turns the police force into an army of cars that can be smashed through like bowling pins. This was a rare feeling compared to older games like the Driver and GTA series, or even the earlier NFS games, where the cops would have no problem slamming into the player's car and giving them trouble.

Despite being an open world filled with cops, Need for Speed Most Wanted is no GTA clone. This is its own style of racing game genre entirely. The choice of cars are the NFS usual, ranging from the everyday Lexus or Chevy to exotic cars like Porsche and Lamborghini. The racing design is not unlike the city-themed design of Midtown Madness. Here, the player is locked to specific routes and circuits by glowing boundaries. You also needs to worry about timers during time trial races and police chase challenges. During the police challenges, the player is often required to drag out a police chase for a minimum amount of time or cause tons of damage. Oddly, it can be difficult to both keep a police chase alive and to end one, depending on the situation. Long police chases raise the chance of the player making a fatal mistake, such as hitting spikes, or getting stuck on something. There are a few spots where the player can park and wait the chase out, but even those spots are prone to occasional police foolery. At higher levels, the player also has to deal with helicopters and far more aggressive waves of police cars. At the same time, when there's only one police car remaining, it's easy for them to accidentally wreck themselves, leaving the player with no way to keep the chase going.

Most Wanted features a simple 'rise to the top' comeback story where the player gets cheated out of his iconic BMW (a car that would be referenced in future NFS games). And now, the player needs to choose from a selection of comparatively weak starter cars and beat all 15 blacklist members from the bottom up. The game has a repetitive progression system where the player has to acquire bounty by winning races and beating police challenges until they have enough clout to challenge the next blacklist member. These blacklist members are tricky to beat as they have some serious rubberband AI. This turns them into a challenge for anybody who hasn't cleaned up their driving precision. Once the player wins the challenge, they have a chance to unlock the opponent's car, which can save a lot of time during a casual playthrough!

In case the main game isn't challenging enough, an extra challenge series gives the player a big chunk of extra police and time trial challenges, each with a preset car and track combination to play with. Some of these are annoying, like the timed police challenges that force the player to keep a single chase alive for increasingly long amounts of time, with the final one taking up an entire 30 minutes. Some of the racing time trials are also very tight, causing many inevitable restarts. Despite the difficulty, these makes for some fun extra content. Especially the silly challenges that require the player to drive the game's traffic cars.

The game's color palette is a 00s identity crisis mix of gritty brown with cartoonish car designs. Thankfully, the brown filter can be readjusted back to normal via mods, which does make the game seem a bit livelier. The soundtrack is a mix of dramatic hip hop and explosive alt rock/metal tracks. Not to forget the suspenseful original police chase music that the player will be hearing often. It's an experience that's tense and action packed from start to finish, making this feel more cinematic than any Grand Theft Auto or Driver game that came before it. For any enthusiastic car junkie, Most Wanted has to be experienced first hand.

Title
Besides Gran Turismo 3, this honestly tops any other racing game ever made in my opinion. To this day it's still considered the peak of the franchise, and a pivotal game in the entire genre. And for good reason - practically everyone who played this as a kid grew up to be a "car guy". It's iconic, unforgettable, and a genuine landmark title.

I try not to let nostalgia influence my opinions when I praise games I played as a kid. To be fair I was so young, the only thing I remember about this game was that it was fun as fuck, but just to be sure I replayed it recently and it's still a 10/10.

The gameplay is actually fun (somewhat of a rarity in recent racing games, which don't offer much to enjoy besides customization). Besides the plain street races, other events involve catching the highest speed through speed traps, drag races, so on and so forth. The physics + the expertly designed map both make every single race event a blast. Successfully blowing through narrow shortcuts, swerving around traffic, it all gives you a thrill which I've yet to experience in another racing game.

The story, albeit extremely cheesy, is still enjoyable. This is possibly the only racing game I've played with a good story. It does just enough to get you genuinely engaged. You have an extremely nice car, it's (basically) stolen by some asshole, who also gets you sent to jail. He uses your car to become the most notorious street racer in the city. The rest of the game is centered about getting your car back, and getting revenge on the asshole. That's really all there is to it.

And the car is cool enough that, if anything, you play through the entire game just to snag another chance at driving it again. Considering the game's story revolves around trying to get a car back, it'd only make sense to make that car cool as fuck - and holy hell did they succeed on that front. The BMW M3 GTR from this game is undoubtedly one of the most iconic, instantly recognizable fictional cars ever. That clean paint job, the engine sound (along with that nasty transmission whine), the bodywork, i could keep going. It's probably the most memorable part of the game.

There's so much more I could go on about. The soundtrack, the atmosphere, the map, the customization, are all top-notch, and I don't want to write another paragraph but the cop chases in this game were also insanely fucking good. Most Wanted + Underground 2 gave way to a heap of open-world racing games, like Forza Horizon and the Crew. And while those games do have the upper hand in technology and car selection, the old NFS street racers take the cake in every other department.

Horizon is one of many recent racing games which doesn't really feature "fun" racing. The barren maps (which don't seem to take racing OR free roam into consideration with their designs) and track layouts make for shitty, repetitive fuckfests which you only complete in order to earn money for the cars you want. And when you do get those cars, 90% of the time there's not a whole lot you can do to customize them or really make them yours. Don't get me wrong, I love Horizon, but there's really only a couple things that make me come back to those games.

Most Wanted is the highest point of the golden era, a time when you could have a blast racing and driving around, and have just as much fun watching your garage grow and customizing your cars. Long story short, 10/10, perfect game

The Need for Speed games were escapism into a fantasy world based on parts of Europe and Asia with exotic cars from around the world. Being one of the best implementations of a multicultural agenda that was so prevent in the 1990s, Need for Speed was a joy to play with families and friends, with your American Ford GT90 and your cousins Japanese Subaru racing on the road in Germany. It makes the players participants in a global struggle for justice and peace without realizing it.

Then came Underground, and everything I liked about Need for Speed vanished. Previously there was a disembodied American male announcer that could be applied to any race or creed, but with Underground we were introduced to characters that are one-dimensional stereotypes. In Most Wanted (2005), they became more fleshed out by the fact that a live-action crew filmed the game's cutscenes and we finally see multiculturalism in the eyes of people and not just the cars. The narrative objectifies women in a way in that it is a prize to gain, through racing. Most of the women are fairly attractive, even the cop bares her midriff! This is a male fantasy when the previous Need for Speed titles are fairly unisexual in its appeal.

In the career mode of Porsche Unleashed, you get to choose different portraits of people to represent yourself. That's it. It's equality like this that is not questioned by anyone.

Most Wanted takes the Hot Pursuit element of Need for Speed and adds it into the open world that was introduced in Underground 2. For one thing the open world is much more realistic than that of Underground 2, and that gives it props but what are props when the game does not excel at them? The cops do not really chase you as well as they did in Carbon, an underrated, if even as problematic as this game. Referring to future games, Forza Horizon (the first one) appropriately starts you out with a shit car that can only be used in some events. The difficulty is balanced.

Even if you consider the game's contemporaries, like the Burnout series, also by EA, that reinvent the driving game, Need for Speed lacks in speed when it comes to reinventing the genre.

The EA Games Trax, introduced in Hot Pursuit 2, are licensed songs that play as you race or in the menu. They are inappropriate

Not my most wanted
They took the openworld of the Underground series and tried to add on the cop chases of the hot pursuit series, probably resulting in the best Need for Speed up to that point.

The campaign gets you off on a revenge sequence after you lost your favorite car to a police ambush set up by another driver. You start off from the bottom with a lame vehicle, but as you progress through the story by winning races and whatnot, soon you will be getting your hands on finer vehicles. There really isnt much story here, its mostly a backdrop to allow you to roam the streets. There are a couple of cutscenes and the acting is always a bit corny.

The racing is arcadey and fast. There is a lot of options to customize your vehicle, as well as buy new ones. You can tune your car before races, which can really mean win or lose. The AI is decent and offers a nice challenge most of the time. Where the game really shines though is the cop chases, which can last over 10 minutes or more. The police force is reckless, but you also have the option to slam into them and take them down. They are intense and very fun when they start bringing out the spikes and helicopters. The design of the open world seems built around this, as there are multiple shortcuts and huge jumps to explore, as well as a few garages to hide your car if things get too hot.

The soundtrack is pretty fun as well, to the point of me actually hunting down a couple of these artists after i played the game. Visually it still looks fine for a PS2 game, but at the same time i do feel that they went too brown and grey with the textures. I guess they made this to fit the dark and edgyness of the story, which is a let down.

Overal its is a fun arcade racer, though not up to the level of Burnout. Its lacking a bit when it comes to speed and challenge, amd they really needed to make a mode out of the police chases.
