Jacob Geller tipped me on to this game, and when I saw it, it seemed like nothing particularly special. I played it late last year when I was in a personal slump and this game completely sucked me in. The hostile, inhuman, seemingly living and operational architecture, void of life yet somehow teeming with it. Every corner you turn feels like something *could* be around it, but instead you're greeted with more suffocating corridors and oppressive megaliths, and it's a titillating treat the entire time. this world is entirely foreign, completely unintended for the protagonist to be in, yet somehow she is. Tying yet again to Geller (WARNING: PRETENTION SHOWING) the Susanna clarke book, Piranesi harkens to the feelings of a seemingly personified house, which I felt the echoes of in NaissanceE. It feels as if though there is something that was intended to be living in the empty apartment buildings, and as far as we know, there may very well be, we just never encounter them. There are other, more abstract comparisons i can make, like Untrue Untrue, by Burial. The feeling of open hostility to the viewer/listener, the aftershocks of what may have previously been life in a desolate, empty place in which the heat of the energy that was once there still remains, for you to experience. A unique feeling of unified isolation, be it with the distorted and changed vocal samples of "shell of light" or the empathy you feel with Lucy as she treks through the sands of the final act of the game. In a way, this game sort of feels like a breath of complete fresh air, in the winter on a sunny day, despite you never having felt the sun's warmth at any point in the game.

Music by Pauline Oliveros and nice visuals can't save the game with such horrible, amateurish game design. NaissanceE feels like one big patience test: it is possible to beat this game in one hour, but because of clunky first-person platforming and extremely unintuitive level architecture it can take like 3-4 (painful) hours more.

This just went free-to-play on Steam for whatever reason, but I'm kind of glad that it did since this means that more people will play this amazing game. :D
Some moments in this game made my jaw drop. Honestly NaissanceE is at its "worst" when it presents you with actual "gameplay" instead of cool environments or surprises to gawk at. I wonder how it would look like with raytracing.
