Only battles
Great fun, RTS game that removes all the base building to focus purely on battle tactics (and reflexes). It's slow, deliberate, and punishing in the same way something like Demon's Souls would find so much success with years later.

Great campaign with excellent world building and VO work. The full featured multiplayer mode was a blast. Tons of maps with a lot of different styles, different game modes, story co-op for the entire campaaign, etc. Mod/custom maps were awesome.

The biggest downside of the game was that it's performance was a little weird. On the one hand, the 3d engine looked and performed great for the time, with smooth environments and amazing gib-physics. But the UI responsiveness was awful; it simply felt terrible to type messages in multiplayer due to the legginess of the keystrokes. Bungie was primarily a Mac developer at the time and I played the PC release, so maybe that was why.

It isn't surprising how much success Bungie found in thier later years, based on the quality of this title.
