Mystic Warriors

To a certain age group the arcade game Sunset Riders (and its SNES version) is a shared memory: a tough, side-scrolling shooter where you (and one or two friends) played as one of several cartoony Wild West cowboys, Cormano being the coolest. Anyway, the same company (Konami) made the same game again, but better, and with ninjas, and nobody remembers it because it stayed in arcades. Mystic Warriors has everything you'd want from a game like it: tight pacing, tough-but-fair difficulty, a flamboyant visual style, and a series of insane boss battles. It also manages to flesh out a pretty cool world in the background. Maybe I'm rating this a little too high for anyone who doesn't already love arcade games, but if you're thinking of giving MAME/Fightcade a try, this is a great game to start with. (Sadly no official home port until now.)
