EA Sports' swan song in baseball simulation games is something nigh unfathomable in today's market, saturated with annual releases. Last decade, sports games were a unique among the genres for yearly releases. 2005 marked an exchange in the sports games world that led to two of the best sports games ever made: EA Sports' MVP Baseball 2005 and 2k Sports' ESPN NFL 2k5. EA Sports lost its licensing deal with Major League Baseball, picking up an exclusive license for the National Football League, leading to 2k picking up the MLB license, which saw some success for a few years before being cancelled in 2013, after shipping almost the exact same game. Sony has been making MLB: The Show since 2006. Despite the games that came before it: Ken Griffey Slugfest, the 989 series, World Series Baseball, All-Star Baseball 2003; and those after it, MVP Baseball remains the greatest baseball game of all time, and this should be uncontroversial. MVP Baseball 2005's Owner Mode is perhaps its most innovative feature, giving the deepest Franchise simulation experience seen at the time. While it borrowed from Madden's Franchise modes, MVP's Owner Mode improved heavily and its influence still lingers in Franchise modes throughout the genre today.
