Muv-Luv Alternative

The third part in an extremely long visual novel, Muv-Luv Alternative ends up being half-way interesting military-science-fiction story.

I think most of the emotional cues and character-driven moments in this VN barely tap into high school level, anti-authority angst. Every character feels incredibly purposeful instead of perhaps....realistic. It's hard to sympathise with anything that happens to them. There's also a tinge of nationalistic commentary throughout the game that is halfway palatable and halfway imbecilic? At times the setting feels like propaganda and at others it feels like a thirteen year old private's personal journal. This all sounds very negative, I'm sure, but there is some ironic merit in this game's badly-written dialogue and philosophical ponderings.. Sort-of like a deep dive into child-like introversion.

I have a hard time seeing anyone genuinely enjoying this story in 2021; Muv-Luv Alternative mostly seems like a historical relic. I think there are better visual novels from the early-to-mid aughts to invest your time in.
