Title
Mortalus begins with a narration vaguely explaining what is going on, you're character has some sort of curse and the only way to get rid of it is to obtain immortality. So you and your master go forth...before the two of you separate and the evil monk order The Hand comes after you.
When it comes down to it, Mortalus is a Myst-clone that considers itself gothic horror but is more an unamusing collection of various shades of black. I don't know what the problem with Mac users are, but us simple Windows folk do not find it endearing to fiddle around with the brightness settings on our monitor every time we open and close a game.
And what a strange game it is, unlike some adventure games that will remain nameless, Mortalus does not try to beat the player with highly obtuse puzzles, no. Mortalus beats the player with "put the mouse here or suffer" sprints, crossbow battles and swordfights. As interesting as action sequences can be in an adventure game, they aren't particularly well made. The sprints are little more than a memorization challenge and the swordfights are nigh impossible to win at.
Once you figure the control scheme out, the puzzles themselves offer little challenge either, meaning half the game is breezing through puzzles like a god and the rest is tripping over branches, bridges and swords.
Joking aside, the atmosphere is well put together, even if it leans towards the incompetent overly black coloring scheme. It's just not very good as a completed product.
