Quite possibly the most broken mainstream fighting game of the modern era, and I loved every minute of it.
A lot of experimentation here that didn't translate to future releases, which is a shame, including stages with varying length, tag team mode and a challenge tower that was made with thought. The most obvious standout of this game is the fully fledged story mode, and after three more entries into the series, this one still stands as the best.
The roster was also impossible not to like, being an amalgamation of the stories of Mortal Kombat I, II and III albeit altered. The only downside being that the success of this game likely prevented NRS from adding 3D era characters for a long time.
Online was absolutely terrible, but every fighting game had terrible net code at the time except Fightcade/GGPO.
Mortal Kombat wasn't just a reboot, but a series revival. It also did what fighting games have struggled to do since the 90's and early/mid 2000's, engage casual audiences. Sadly as much as it managed to influence the genre to consider single player content, the game did a poor job of converting its casuals to be even slightly competitive, and as such died shortly after it had arrived.
Side note: Please NRS just make Mortal Kombat fast again

I am writing this review minutes after finally finishing the game for the first time after owning it for many years. The story is really fun and the cutscenes alone make the game great. Unfortunately, I only enjoyed playing as like half of the characters. Many of those characters that were not so fun even ended up becoming fun to play as in later games, some examples being Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Raiden, and Smoke. Throughout the story mode, the fights where the player is faced against TWO opponents are the absolute worse and a good portion of the unfairness in the game. Most normal single opponents weren't too bad but boss opponents like Goro and Kintaro (not really Sindel) were total bitches and blocked like most attacks and did probably like double damage. My biggest problem with the game, an issue that brings my rating down a whole 1/10, is the two Shao Kahn fights. I probably spent as much time on them combined as I did on every other fight. I could write an essay on why they were so awful but I'll sum it up in some points: - He hardly took damage from anything, EVEN X-RAY - He could knock your health down half a bar in no time if you're not careful - HIS X-RAY DOES OVER HALF YOUR HEALTH - It seems like his range covers half the screen - It took me dozens of attempts and I could only defeat him with the cheapest strategies - I nearly lost my sanity The first fight as Liu was not as bad because he never threw his hammer and the flying kick was very helpful but I literally could not win without letting him die to the timer running out. Raiden's only useful move for me was the electric fly. NOT EVEN UPERCUT COULD SAVE ME. Because of Shao Kahn alone, I do not see myself ever attempting the campaign again, lest I wish to lose my mind. I consider him to be the second hardest thing I have face in any videogame (behind the Cluster Truck final boss which I gave up on).

I had a friend in college who loved this game a lot, he bought the game for me a few days before I left for Summer break between my Sophomore and Junior years. We'd occasionally take it out and play but it just never interested me that much. It was an alright fighting game, and I do remember playing the old Mortal Kombat games on my cousin's Genesis sometimes when I'd visit their house. But, this is essentially the characters from that game but with 3D graphics and it just feels similar to every other fighting game to be honest, except with fatalities. I'll admit, the fatalities in this game are pretty gory and fun the first few times, but after you've seen them a dozen or so times they get kind of old. The system is basic fighting game style, you block, you have basic combos, ranged attacks, different classes of characters. But there are just better fighting games out there that this only feels worth playing for the violence and nostalgia for the older Mortal Kombat games.

Oodles of characters, extras and singular missions to test various parts of the skillset and bring the gameplay to its limits? A dedicated story mode with a real narrative, full cutscenes and progression that makes sense? A decent online lobby system for its time? A revamped art design that hones in on what makes MK work while jettisoning what dragged later entries down? This was where the bar was raised; for the longest time, only Smash could keep up in terms of value proposition.

Fatalities peaked here, tbh. One complain I constantly have about Fatalities from MKX onwards is that they seem so convoluted and hyper-gory that they feel more like compensation than humiliation. Here, they are short, sweet and cathartic as hell.
The hype I had for this game was insane. If it had a balance patch that fixed the broken stuff it would still have a scene. I still hold this in a high regard when it comes to reboots.
