In a uniquely styled RPG, a player navigates a world that operates on a real-time clock, interacting with diverse characters and engaging in non-traditional combat. The narrative unfolds based on player choices, leading to a variety of possible story outcomes.
Disclaimer, this is definitely a note taking kind of puzzle game a là Return of the Obra Dinn, and while I can understand how this can turn people off who don’t want to waste their time dicking around in a game’s world, I personally feel that this game is extremely refreshing even today so long as one takes the time to take every detail into account.
The world is sprawling with secrets, and unique dream logic esque puzzles, and if you don’t have a careful eye for detail it can be difficult to enjoy. Sometimes your only cue for solving a puzzle is a random sound cue, or a tiny piece of flavor text. And in that way the game takes a life outside of the screen in how you need to approach it. And that’s kind of perfect with the central theme of the game is being able to strike a balance between escapism and realism. It’s possible that this game is overly ambitious with what it expects from a player to accomplish without a guide. But I think ultimately a game being better with a guide shouldn’t always be a detractor, games are not the only media with extra-peripheral media being a vessel to boost the experience.
What would a rock opera be if you couldn’t quite catch all the words? Written words do not come prepackaged in a purely audial work, so does needing up the lyrics somehow detract here too?
Anyway, all I really want to say here is that this game is undeniably special and bursting with charm, flavor, thought provoking narrative, interesting art direction, fantastic score, and a beautifully imagined world with not a single stone going unturned. I am so glad I get to play a game which clearly had so much heart and fun put into the creation of, it will stick with me for a long time. (Not to mention the influence this game would have on things like Undertale, Yume Nikki, and Petscop, and the game itself brimming with Mother-like flair)
Open the door everyone, reclaim the moon’s light.

A charmingly odd and unique adventure game somewhere on Undertale's wavelength. As a piece of puzzle game design, however, it is a total failure. Some of the things you have to do to progress are so obscure and arbitrary that I do not believe a normal person could conceivably get through this game without a walkthrough. But if you come with a guide in hand and avoid this misdesigned aspect of the game, Moon is a PS1-era curio well worth checking out.

An archaic experience to say the least, with strange puzzles, some feeling unsolvable without glancing at a guide. The game's masterful art direction, soundtrack, and fun monster catching mechanics save it from being just a weird forgettable anti-rpg. Plenty of emotional story beats are to be found here too. I almost don't want to say anything about this game, it calls to the people who would like it, I would say if you are a fan of Undertale, this might be one of the easiest reccomendations in my life to make to you, Undertale wouldn't exist without this game and its idea of saving monsters rather than defeating them. Glad that a lot of the team behind this went on to make Little King's Story, one of my favorite games of all time.

Lovely little slow-burning adventure game that finally came out overseas after 20-ish long, long years that features a very unique cast of characters and a great design feedback loop as far as exploration goes. You'll have fun as long as you don't mind having to dig into the manual to understand some of the gameplay elements since the Switch version is a pure port that doesn't take you by the hand much like how games just were like before the mid-00s.

i want to continue playing this game so much as it is so immensely inspired, but its also so obtuse past a certain point man, just kills all of my motivation
Loved this. Maybe not one of the most "fun" games I've played but certainly one of the most unique and memorable. Couldn't put this thing down until I finished it, and even now part of me wishes I was still spending time chillin in the world of Moon.
Sorry, but I feel like you have to be a masochist to get through this. If the point of the game really is to make you stop playing the game and go outside, it failed because it just made me want to play a better game. I respect the uniqueness and creativity though, just not for me.
