Crodo, the overseer of Xeen, has been imprisoned by the self-proclaimed Lord Xeen. Crodo asks a band of adventures through their dreams to help recuse him and destroy Lord Xeen. The adventurers accept, but they know they must train hard before ever hoping to challenge Lord Xeen himself.
Clouds of Xeen is one of my favorite "blobbers" of all time.
The game has fantastic pixel art that has aged pretty well to this day. Enemy portraits are a particular highlight. The environments look colorful and are distinct from one another.
There are a good few catchy tracks in Xeen, though I definitely wish the soundtrack was longer. MIDI in all its glory. The gameplay is addictive and quick. Combat takes no time at all to progress through, which alone puts many of its peers to shame. Inventory management is a bit tough though, as it doesn't take much time to pick up dozens of pieces of equipment. There's a clear sense of progression through the game, which is something I really look for in RPGs. You can tell when you are getting stronger.
Probably the weakest point is the storyline. There isn't much here. The basic premise is that you gotta rescue a dude locked in a tower by the evil Lord Xeen. There are lots of sidequests, but again their premise is pretty simple. Rarely are there more than fetch quests or "kill x amount of x" type deals.
One small thing that makes this game unique is that enemies don't respawn. Once an area is clear, it will forever be safe to traverse. Just something small that cuts down on how tedious it could have been.
And if you have Darkside of Xeen installed, then you can combine the worlds into one massive game. Have yet to do that, but it's on my list.
