Mibibli's Quest is a niche indie NES-throwback platformer from 2014 (or 2016 if you are playing the Steam version). It's a strange hybrid between Mega Man 2 the most psychedelic and post-modern tendencies of indie games that came out in the period.
Sort of anyways! It's got a mixture of just absurdist humour but also tries to have really different mechanics and themes on purposes over typical platformers from the 1980s and early 1990s. (Purposely tries to avoid things like Ice World/Fire World/etc. with sections like an Egg-themed world or a Dance-themed world with DDR mechanics, the game does have city and water-themed worlds though).
The game is properly brutal as expected from an indie platformer, spikes surround the world, projectiles can be everywhere, but in comparison to something like Eversion or I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game, it's hard, but you can see what you are supposed to do and I don't feel like I'm having a heart attack when I'm making simple jumps). Just like in the Megaman series, it's hard, but the levels are short, so you don't have to plow through everything each time you die. Unlike Megaman, I really felt like switching items really benefitted certain areas depending on where I was.
Only issues I'd really rag about is (by designer choice) there is no pause button. They are also highly dedicated to emulator controls so X and Z are shoot and jump, and arrow keys are for moving. This can be changed outside the game, Also, outside the battles with Crocadibli (your main rival), the boss battles are not on par with the rest of the games ideas and design)
So what appears to be a low-effort crap has a lot more ideas than gameplay than you'd expect. Recommended if you are a fan of the genre and checked out the more polished 2D platform games of the era.
