The first entry of the popular run and gun franchise, and i actually only played it after playing 2 and 3. This is important because this first title is way more grounded, there are no alien or monstrous creatures in here, just lots of soldiers depicting a fictional take on the vietnam war im guessing.
The game is much more basic and straight to the point in the sense that there are no gimmicks or complicated mechanics. You just shoot, explode or stab everything on sight through the jungle setting that most of the game takes place. The lack of diversity makes it more banal, but does wonders for pacing as you wont get as many dumb deaths. Its still a very hard 1 hit death game, but with enough credits its somewhat easy to force your way through the end.
Love the pixel artstyle, which is very detailed and full of charm. Mechanically the game is very satisfying and responsive, which is even more impressive considering all the iddle animations taking place.
Its a fest for the eyes and senses, and playing it once to the end is enjoyable enough. BUt these sort of games are made for replays, and there are just a bit too many annoying moments (like rushing hordes of enemies, carpet bombing...) to make me stuff from giving it another try.

Does anyone remember of the supa-dupa rare Metal Slug X - which was released on the PS1? (That one with the UFOs and flying saucers) -- It is not in the database here. While the 1st one is a SNK classic, and the 3rd chapter is the most praised, I feel the best one out there is the Metal Slug X.
controls are kinda clunky when compared to the other games, makes me wish there was a version of this with the X/3 engine (or rather a rom hack, cough cough)
