Title
Phantom Pain was my first Metal Gear Solid game experience, so I wasn't influenced by the legendary reputation this series of games was carrying and the expectations fans would await from this one. And to be honest this is one of the very best games I have ever played. The story is weird and made no sense at all to me, but the gameplay is an absolute master work. A,d of course its replayability makes it really unique. You can sneak or blast everything to attain your objective, you can kill or put to sleep/stun enemies, hide them, chose the weapons to bring on mission with you according to your level of developpment, it's fantastically precise and enjoyable.
Your companions are also a real plus, though I understand people who say it makes the game too easy, but hey you can go on your own, deactivate any help from the game like the reflex mode.
Now, about mother base : you will have to create FOBs in order to advance your levels and be able to developp powerfull weapons but besides that, all the online features are just waste of time, and of course, MONEY. I just hate all that online side of games of these times. Let the game be the game and stop stealing money from the gamers.

Title
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is something of a wild ride with plenty of ups and downs. Great gameplay mechanics shine here, but the overly confusing story and less than exciting quests left me wishing this game was over sooner rather than later.

What I liked
1. The sheer amount of ways you can handle every situation is pretty insane to think about. The combination between choosing your weapon, buddy, equipment, and vehicle results in a seemingly endless array of choices. Granted, you'll probably figure out what works for you fast and only use a few different load-outs anyway.
2. The amount of choices in load-out also allows you to complete missions in several different.ways. You can choose to either go completely stealth, or just fly in on your attack chopper and D-Walked to absolutely tear everything apart.
3. MGSV gives you plenty ways of dealing with enemies beyond the limitations of your load-out. Between fultoning entire trucks of people and throwing out dummy senior officers, MGSV provides plenty of entertaining ways to attack problems.
4. I can point out a few cinematic sequences that are just incredible and really show off the ability of the MGS team. Escaping the hospital stands out as one example, and these sequences serve to bridge the free-roam aspect and the typical MGS linear progression.

What I didn't like
1. Holy shit the story is so confusing. Albeit this is my first MGS game, but still, it shouldn't be this hard to wrap my head around things. I must have spent at least an hour watching youtube videos that tried to explain everything leading up to and surround Phantom Pain and I still couldn't follow everything that was going on. In game, the story is wrapped into many several minute long cassette tapes that they seriously expect you to stop what you're doing and listen to. I tip my hat off to everyone that actually listened to every cassette tape in the game. I understand the main idea of what happened in the beginning and end of the game (which btw, doesn't even explain everything that's happening), but if you want someone to explain what happened in between, you might want to find someone else.
2. I didn't exactly feel the necessity of a lot of the quests but perhaps that stemmed from my lack of understanding of the entire story. The main quests just weren't that exciting and it really didn't take long for the side quests to turn into classic fetch/kill quests and start repeating themselves.
3. Mother Base was super complicated, and for what? I do everything anyway. I swear it felt like I was just housing several hundred people instead of actually building an army. Visiting Mother Base meant little more than just a home port to re-up a new mission. Interactions with my crew didn't branch out from the necessary main story line and mainly just involved me knocking them out for fun (that sounds worse than it is). The online currency system doesn't make any sense at all and means you could be rich one minute or millions in debt depending on if you're connected to the internet.
4. Was it really necessary to flaunt your name in big letters after every mission, Kojima?

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is without doubt a fun game and I recommend it to anyone looking to mess around in mechanically-sound stealthy open-world environment. To me, that's where the appeal ends though. If you're in it looking for a Witcher 3 equivalent in terms of story, you're going to be disappointed.

In retrospect, I think I would have had more fun with this game if I just picked it up occasionally to mess around in the open-world rather than forcing myself to finish it in order to move on to the next game in my backlog.

Title
The Metal Gear games hold a special place in my heart, over the years I've become engrossed with the insane characters, set pieces, and lore this franchise is known for. But MGSV seems to stand on it's own in many ways, and breaks away from the series conventions more often than not. The biggest difference is the open world aspect, in Phantom Pain you're given two decently sized areas to explore (Afghanistan and some random place in Africa) and missions are dished out similarly to that in MGS: Peace Walker. The open world is a breath of fresh air for a series commonly plagued by linear environments, and as a consequence of this you're given an almost endless set of possibilities for infiltrating outposts or enemy strongholds. MGSV provides you with so many different weapons, tools, and support options that it's easy to loose track of it all, but I did find a weapon/tool set that worked perfectly for my style of play (e.i. sniper rifle, sub-machine with rubber bullets, smoke grenades, and a grenade launcher in case b****es be hating!). The new buddy system is also a huge hit! Personally, I loved bringing along my sexy demonic sniper girlfriend Quiet to both scout out enemies and cover me if I get spotted, but I also love my dog, and the D-Walker was essential for some of the tougher boss fights!

Let's talk about the story; this game starts off with a 30 minute prelude that is one of the most heart racing and terrifying set pieces I've ever played in a video game, I literally s*** myself at the part where you had to play dead while a group soldiers were shooting the dead bodies all around you!!! But sadly the rest of this games's set pieces never reach these heights. In fact; like many recent open world games the story here kinda takes a back seat (which feels really bizarre for a Metal Gear game...) in favour of having you complete more traditional quests like extracting prisoners and eliminating enemy commanders. My only real complaint with the game is the lack of a personality compared to previous entries in the series. Don't get me wrong, there are interesting characters and plot points in this game, including really touchy subject matter such as child soldiers, ethnic cleansing, and nuclear warfare.... which is really admirable in and of itself. But I just wish there was more interaction between myself and these characters, and more of the impressive set pieces that this franchise is known for. Even Kiefer Sutherland's snake is practically a silent protagonist in this game, HE BARELY TALKS!... Now I feel really bad for David Hayter! :(

With my only complaint out of the way, this game is fantastic! I haven't even talked about the building and management of Mother Base and your own private army. I had become obsessed with building up my different units and initiating development projects to upgrade my gear! This game also sports an impressive sound track, with the highlights being the selection of classic 80s tunes which include Ah-Ha's Take On Me, Europe's The Final Count Down, and even Joy Division's Love Will Tare Us Apart!!! I can't tell you how funny it is to blast Kids in America on my helicopter's loud speakers just to mess with the Soviet solders as I run around shanking them! Mwahahahaha!!!.... Anyway this game is an easy contender for GOTY, would not be surprised if it sweeps awards at this years Game Awards, you should definitely pick it up!

Best mechanics gameplay, the amount of freedom of choice is incredible, but horrible open world design. I love the game in short bursts but its so repetitive and grindy it ended up being a slog to get through.
