Title
phenomenal memories playing this in the dead of winter 2018 on a CRT TV, having to communicate in broken English with diehard Japanese and Brazilian players that exclusively play Peace Walker ONLY. even though there's only like a dozen people still playing, its literally the only game they play. they showed me just how insane this game gets. i see these dudes S-RANKing missions in under a minute with items and gadgets i didn't even know you could get. stealth camos, railguns that need multiple players to charge up and another to fire, sniper rifles the size of Cloud's sword, just the most absurd shit - completely destroying these missions like its nothing. i felt like a student learning from the grandmasters. they literally took me under their wing to teach me the mechanics i had no idea about. i remember in particular a lobby we had going - me, an American, a Brazilian, a Japanese guy, and a guy from Mexico, all attempting our damnedest to communicate out of the sheer love for some ancient PSP game everyone forgot about a decade ago... if they needed to correct me or tell me to do something, 90% of the time i had to run their message through google translate, think of what to say, run my message through google translate, and type it on the stupidly slow PS3 chat keyboard... a caveman like experience i cherish in memory like non other -i don't know where these guys are or ended up doing, but i assume they're still taking newbie Peace Walker players under their wings and helping them understand the sheer amount of shit you can do / unlock : ^ )

i learned to love the grind, completing missions faster and faster, getting more and more S-RANKed soldiers and firing the shitty ones, eventually getting the recipes for stealth camo and the best smoke grenades in the game... the AI are braindead once you learn how it works, and once that happens you can break this shit in half and turn it inside out - grueling battles struggled with at the beginning turn to sub 1-min sweeps, especially with multiple people. for a while, i actually needed a buddy to help me get through certain SIDE-ops until i was able to manage it on my own. it felt like a true triumph being able to S-Rank any mission on my own within minutes. after 70 hours, i had every item i needed to turn the game inside out, with every mission s-ranked, and tons of amazing memories with the veterans of Peace Walker. there's a point system called Camaraderie, where you make better and better connections with your friends based on how much you play together/actions done. one Japanese guy in particular went AFK for like 3 hours so i could just grind out whatever i needed to do with a real person so i could unlock what i needed - an unparalleled community.

peace walker is not for everyone, and probably sounds worse to a lot of people the further you get in. you either get through the main story once and forget about it, or end up obsessing over it and getting into the nitty gritty of R&D grinding and S-tier soldier farming. i excused the jank at first cause its a PSP game, but after a while it became something intensely personal. everything about this era oozes charm for me, and peace walker is no different. i pray these servers never shut down ...

Not as good as the games in the mainline series, still a good story, great characters and great level design make this a great experience.
it's pretty straightforward and a lot less memorable, but the added base building aspect and mission structure are cool and serve as the basis for MGS5, although a bit raw in Peace Walker.
Still only compared to the other games in the series is it disappointing, it stands on it's own as a great stealth game and a very enjoyable experience.

Title
A tribute game to the Sony cassette player
I really admire Konami's tackle of this game being all about the portability and sort of making it feel like you can play this game anywhere, it's probably the reason why you would want to buy a PSP, like it's one of the best selling games on the system. And the game's mechanics speak for themselves, they're nicely paced short missions and boss fights that feel nice and concise, ironically enough you can also listen to the many characters' backgrounds through a Sony Cassette player which I found memorizing. The controls feel so nice and concise along with the CQC element looking really nice on a system like this. Also the UI is really awesome, and I like the whole building your army thing that first got introduced in Portable Ops, and this being rated T for Teens, means that the story has some narrative freedom to feel very nice and campy at some points, which for some people could be a huge turn off, but for me it was pretty tolerable for the most part. This is also the first game to introduce one of my most favorite videogame characters of all time, Kazuhira Miller, and by god, do I just love every single aspect about him, the voice acting, his outlook on life, his relationship with Big Boss is so similar to that of Solid Snake's and Otacon's, that it feels like a meme. Blah, blah, blah the theme of memes in MGS 2. Great game, with a decent enough plot (Though the villains do need a lot reworking to make them feel memorable), it's worth your time playing this game

Title
Metal Gear Solid on PSP is about what you'd expect, its unlike the other games that are open ended and give you free reign to explore. This game is broken up into missions and each mission you complete will move you on to the next one. Peace Walker is an okay game but super repetitive and I didn't really like the structure. The boss fights were okay and the controls weren't bad, but I felt it was limited by the hardware and is nowhere near as good as the 4 games that were on console before this. It was still cool seeing Big Boss' story continued into the 70s and seeing the relatives of characters from the other games. But I just wanted more out of this and the only thing I really liked about this were the boss fights and the story. I guess the whole base building thing was alright too and assigning soldiers you recruit to different units, which was further expanded and improved in the 5th game. But I'd rather go back to any of the other games than go back to this one, its easily the weakest game in the series if you don't count Portable Ops or Ground Zeroes. This just isn't open ended enough and I couldn't get immersed in this.

Title
Sneaky snake
Peacewalker has the somewhat unique distinction of both being one of the best games of the PSP, but at the same time the worst entry in the Metal Gear franchise since it went 3d. The most interesting thing about it is basically that it became a prototype to what would come to be Metal Gear Solid V, but the level design and ideas here actually fit for a portable game. Missions are very short affairs, with small areas branching off into another. While the main story is short, the endgame component is huge, and you can sink a whole lot of hours grinding to get the best Metal Gear and weapons. It is in many ways similar to Monster Hunter, which is more than adequate since there are a couple of easter egg missions where you hunt down monsters from that series.

Mechanically it plays very similarly to Snake Eater, but with gameplay compromises to fit the controls of the psp. This means that proning is a thing of the past, but to be fair it seems that the AI of the enemy soldiers has also been made more lenient to allow for stealthy playthroughs without frustration. I actually found it by far the easiest metal gear, as it just all about crouching and tranquilizing guards, and kidnapping them to work on your base. There is a bigger focus on boss fights, but these tend to be tedious affairs do to the huge life bars and clunky controls.

I could never get much into the story about this one. Something about Paz and chico that made them seem like really uninteresting characters to me, though it did grab my attention with one hell of an ending. I like the theme of nuclear deterrence, and how relevant it still is unfortunatly today, but i didnt feel they explore that well enough or in the right way. Still not quite enough to recomment this one except for fans of the series.

PSP titles of popular franchises often tend to be reduced and more simplistic versions of the mainline games but this served more as an evolution for the series that would eventually culminate in MGSV.
This is a drastic improvement over the already ambitious and underrated Portable Ops and one of best games on the system. It looks great, plays way better and even with the superior PS3-port holds up well on the original hardware. What a blast!

Of course, this being a Kojima game, there is some major bs. The button mashing is almost transcendent in its ridiculousness, and I hate it when a game forces you to fulfill lengthy requirements in order to see the proper ending. The entire last chapter is just a waste of time and a lame joke. And don't get me started on the whole Paz situation.
