Maru's Mission

An outrageously broken action platformer that is so bizarre and non-functioning that it's accidentally endearing.

You play as Maru, a cocksure ninja warrior trying to rescue his girlfriend. It plays out a bit like Mega Man, shooting enemies until a boss, shooting the boss, and receiving a new weapon. The new weapons, however, can only be used in the boss fights. Nothing ever explains this.

There's a lot more that can't be explained too, like how the jump button doesn't force gravity on you, so holding it is an infinite float upwards. Or why after bosses, Maru takes a break to hunt dolphins and sharks in the sea as part of a harpooning mini game. Or how some bosses and enemies can get stuck inside blocks or glitch out and never attack you. Or why sometimes your shuriken attack is replaces by some maelstrom of randomly shooting magic bolts. Literally nothing in this game makes any consistent sense. It's a fucking mess.

If everything in this game worked it actually would have been really fun. Maru is a pretty likable protagonist and there's some variety to the gameplay, even if it is easy as sin. As it stands, it's fucking insane how busted it is, and that just leaves it as disappointing.
