It's no secret the latest Mario Sports games on Switch: Tennis, Golf, and now Soccer (you could even lump Switch Sports in there too), are severely lacking in content, and Strikers is the worst offender.
There is literally NOTHING to do outside of standard matches. You can play a match online, locally, or within the confines of a tournament bracket. That's it. That is the ENTIRE game.
Considering this, Battle League really relies on it's core gameplay being solid, and unfortunately while good, it's not my favorite. Certainly the deepest gameplay in the series with a wide variety of tech and movement options that add layers to the most dedicated players. Consider multiplayer and coordinating with friends and the gameplay opens itself up to a ton of variety. That being said it comes at the price of a steep learning curve to master, but no need to worry, you don't have to be an expert to still enjoy the new idiosyncrasies of the gameplay. While depth is great, I for one enjoy the simplicity of the original game far more and Charged, with the addition of it's "charged" mechanic added just enough to heighten the experience of the original and is still my preferred method of playing Mario Strikers.
When it comes to Battle League, it has absolutely nothing but passable core gameplay and it's predecessors on GameCube and Wii blow it out of the water in every aspect. It's crazy to think this is the same Nintendo that'll delay a Zelda game for months and years to get it JUST RIGHT, but shove these Mario sports game out the door with no content and promises of "free updates" in the future. This release now, fix later approach is grim, and if Nintendo does end up announcing a new Mario Baseball to complete the Mario sports quadrilogy on Switch, I don't know if I'll get excited. Sigh. I'm gonna go play some Mario Strikers Charged now...

Squading up with friends and playing against others online is a lot of fun, and I'll admit I've put more hours into this game because of it, but that still doesn't excuse the lack of content...
I don't own this game, but the animation quality and models in this game are 10/10 flawless. Next Level Games and their squash and stretch animation style for Mario is so awesome, and I want them to hire me.
